Calling all health providers

#1

Just wondering if there are any health providers on the forum. I’m a nurse practitioner practicing in the states. I’ve only been out of school for two years so developing the art of patient care is still in progress. I have a great collaborating physician who is all about low carb. We use keto in our office for weight loss and treating chronic disease. It is difficult when interpreting labs and giving recommendations when my usual advice might not line up with the general recommendations (treating high cholesterol with keto for example). I would love to have some resources and research that backs up these recommendations. An example would be an elevated trig/hdl ratio suggesting insulin resistance. I think I heard this mentioned by Dr. Adam Nally but this was never a ratio I was taught to look at in school. It would be great if anyone had any links to articles that referenced these type of things. I don’t know if the admins would want to create a category for health providers to ask each other questions and seek advice. It’s not like there is a guideline book for encorporating keto into your practice. I would be nice to get feedback on different tests others run and what values they shoot for, supplements recommended to patients, etc.

This may be a good place for people to point their own doctors to as well if they are open minded about the science.

Dentist here! Great I dead for a thread!

Oh. So excited you replied. So I’ve recently watched a documentary on cancer and there was some mention that the old metal fillings used for cavities may be tied to some health problems. Have you heard this or were you taught this in school? I haven’t researched it much yet but was curious on the thoughts from a dentist’s perspective

I have yet to find some solid evidence. And I take a pretty keen interest in the oral-systemic link, more than the vast majority of dentists. And I’m certainly open to the evidence of its presented one day. But I have yet to see it. So the two amalgam fillings I have in my mouth will stay there for now. Hope this helps!

2nd year med student here, so I’m not quite a provider juuuuuust yet, but I’m hoping I count just the same. I dropped some 70 lbs since last April and managed to get through two finals weeks without caving and sucking down the carbs. And yes, I’ve had to educate a lot of my classmates.

M2s are great, and that is excellent given the stress of your schedule.

Daughter enters med school this fall. Mom’s biggest worry is how she will feed herself with all the stress to come.

Is she a keto ninja already?

(jketoscribe) #11

Nope. She has a horrible diet. We call her the pastatarian and she’s a junk food junkie (buys crap with her own money). She’d never eat a decent meal except that we cook healthy. She has avoided learning to cook. She’s very thin, and has always been my low blood sugar kid, even when we had full control of her diet. I’m hoping she’ll figure it out really fast once she’s on her own. Trying to give her some survival cooking skills but she’s pretty stubborn.

I am an RN on a busy surgical floor. The results of my N=1 experiment are there for everyone to see, yet I can’t even get fellow RNs to try keto, never mind my patients. I would love to practice some place where keto is accepted.

I am an RN, certified diabetes educator and nurse practitioner student (1more year!!!). I currently work in GI sedating people for colonoscopies as an RN. Luckily I don’t have to deal with diet or lifestyle there…I just have to make sure they’re fasted and cleaned out!! ha. I do diabetes education freelance using a lchf keto approach. I would love to network here to meet other practitioners who are using keto to treat patients. Any advice for seeking employment after graduation would be much appreciated

I’m also a fairly new (about 1.5 yrs) Nurse Practitioner practicing in the US. I work in a family practice in the outpatient side of a hospital. I have been intrigued with using diet/nutrition to help prevent/manage chronic disease, but also feel like my hands are a bit tied when it comes to recommending diets that aren’t officially sanctioned by the practice/hospital. I typically advocate for a low carb/healthy fat/mod protein diet, but don’t specifically get into the amounts, as this goes directly against the advice that the AMA/ADA/etc give us to instruct our patients. This drives me nuts, as I know better, which is why I can’t specifically give details. I do, however, instruct my patients to different resources that they can better educate themselves with. Part of the trouble is that we are given guidelines that we have to follow (or Medicare/Medicaid/other insurance companies won’t pay).
In a perfect world, I would love to work as an independent provider at my own clinic and bill patients directly, so insurance doesn’t have to get involved. In this case, I know folks would be committed to change (if they need to pay directly), but this would exclude those who potentially couldn’t afford this from this type of treatment.
In the meantime, I will cont to advocate lifestyle changes over meds and looking at diet as a primary approach, stressing whole, unprocessed foods, and healthy fats.

I’m a NP that has been practicing for almost 10 years. I work with mostly indigent patients and the cost of a Keto diet is my biggest blockade. I may be transferring to a different office soon and am trying to build up a portfolio of PDFs and info I can give to patients (and the other providers) about ketogenic diets.

Hello!! Can you point me in the direction of this group? I’d love to join and share info with others

I’m a MD practicing internist in suburban Philadelphia. I more recently became ABOM certified in in Obesity. I function mostly as a primary care doctor but also pinch hit in hospital medicine fairly frequently. My philosophy with regard to most chronic disease is fix diet first and get back to me if there is still a problem. I use LCHF, keto or paleo as first-line diet of choice for virtually everyone. I was at Keto-Fest and met Carl & Richard there although I doubt they remember me. They were very busy. If you need a Keto friendly doc near Philly call me! Office #610-495-2300
