Butter: The Good Sugar of Keto

I’ve been eating keto since June 2018. It’s been a good journey.
I didn’t have much weight to lose - but I’m now pretty thin: consistently just under 144 pounds, and 5’8" (173 cm). And healthier than I was before going keto.

Here’s something I recognized recently:
Butter is a wonderful tool when eating keto.
I’ve been calling it the Sugar of Keto because it gives you pure calories, without any other nutrients coming along for the ride. But of course it doesn’t increase blood sugar or insulin the way sugar does. Win-win.

Eating butter is a great way to add calories without adding any protein or carbs.
I now add it to many foods - and often just feed myself a tablespoon or so using a table knife. Not the sharp kind, of course.

(Other fats are equally effective but most don’t taste as good, especially when eaten on their own.)

Getting enough calories can be a challenge, when limiting both carbs and protein. Fatty meats and sausage, and cheese are great - but without adding some fat, they don’t give me enough calories to power me through the day. So, butter to the rescue.

I’ll use salted or unsalted butter, depending on how I feel about my salt consumption that day.

My buddy that’s lost from 376 to 245 takes a spoonful of the solid coconut oil before he goes to run or if he’s crunched for time. He says it gives him an energy boost.

+1 for the butter love. I eat heaps.

Don’t forget it’s lovely cousin ghee though! It’s easy as pie to make. As a bonus, it’s shelf life is months/years at room temp and it’s great for frying because it’s smoke point is much higher than butter’s.

Dairy lovers of the world unite!

I bought 8 bricks of butter last night at Costco --4 salted and 4 unsalted =). It was on sale for $2.99 and I am stocking up on all grocery supplies atm so was a great deal and good timing for me =).

It’s amazing the difference between an 80% fat American butter and the 82% fat Kerrygold. I wish I could buy Kerrygold for all of my butter needs.

Maybe when I hit the lottery, could y’all imagine that news interview?

“What are you going to do with your winnings?”
“I’m going to pay off my debts and then buy Kerrygold butter and ribeyes.”

oh this is great to read!
I also buy Kerrygold exclusively. it really is that wonderful. They have it at Costco now here, which does make it (slightly) more affordable…!

I don’t buy myself new clothes or makeup or anything. Save it all up for Kerrygold.

Frying with butter again which I have not done for maybe 40 years. But I really like the taste of coconut oil in my coffee. Thats brand new for me. And when the coffee gets cold and the oil solidifies- it even tastes good that way.
I just wonder how it is possible to not get enough calories with all the fats we eat. Dont they have double the calories of carbs and proteins? Here I am struggling to keep my calorie count lower. I was warned against fat bombs. Is there a trick or something I am missing? Cronometer said I have only eaten 1499 Kcal today too. I dont know how that is possible because I would think that the 4 pieces of bacon and egg omelette I had for breakfast alone would be that much. Its confusing.
