My first post…be gentle with me…
Today marks 21 days on Keto, and loving it! Have struggled with nausea, but found relief by adding salt to my water (can’t taste it!). I even like BPC - I have 3 cups in the morning each with Stevia, 1t MCT and 1t butter. Have discovered the need to drink it slowly, as I have always guzzled my coffee 'cause I love it :).
My question - since the butter and the MCT are saturated fat, should I swap out the butter for olive oil? Or is there a reason that the butter and MCT are a good combo? I just have those moments where I am scooping butter and think…“Is this ok?”.
So far down about 6 lbs. The first 3-4 lbs really fast - water - now much slower. I’m ok with that as I feel like that means I am now tapping into fat stores and slowly burning them up.
Thanks in advance for advice and support :)!
Bulletproof Coffee - to butter or not to butter?
Why would you want to switch it up just because they’re saturated fats? Why would you want to defile your coffee with olive oil? Love yourself more, please.
Hahaha yes the act of adding olive oil to my coffee makes me {{shudder}}.
Yeah I was concerned about the amount of saturated fat…
Butter and heavy cream guy myself - mct oil gives me the runs something fierce. I would never pass up on the butter… that’s what makes my coffee taste so good. As a bonus, I switched to pecan flavored coffee, and the combo of butter and pecan is amazing
Been using a local brand at central market, but tomorrow I’ll be trying one I ground at kroger of all places
Another option? I just have coffee with cream (2floz or 60ml). No butter or MCT but I like it.
Hang in there 3 weeks is good but give it a few more weeks muscles and everything will get more efficient, it’ll get better.
Otherwise when I first started I had to make my peace with fat (like all of us I suppose), and especially butter and saturated fats.
Turns out Mr Saturated Fat was the good guy - falsely accused - it was Mr Sugar who did it.
You body loves fat, it loves it so much it makes it! Carbs are converted to fat for a future fuel supply. Butter and olive oil are the most similar to that natural fat around our belly. So they are both good. If we eat fat, we burn fat. So don’t worry it won’t be left lying around.
Ancel Keys and his devotees are responsible for the widely-held belief that saturated fats are bad for you and should be limited.
He was a zealot, not a true scientist and his infamous “Seven Country Study” which is the basis for his theory has 7 countries because he threw out the data on countries with diets high in saturated fats and low heart disease.
Heart disease is a disease of inflammation and a low sugar/low carb diet reduces inflammation in most people. The cholesterol the doctors found lining the arteries in patients who died of heart disease was laid down by the body in an attempt to reduce inflammation.
“The Big Fat Surprise” by Nina Teicholz is a good read and an eye-opener.
The same COULD be said of sugar since your body also makes glucose. The thing is, it makes what we need when we give it very little which is not what most of us were doing for a very long time.
I drink my BPC with HWC, coconut oil, stevia, marine collagen, and cinnamon. I skip the MCT since I use coconut oil and I don’t want to over do it. Sometimes if I know I’m not going to eat breakfast i’ll add butter. I had great advice a few weeks ago… “Don’t drink your meals. Real food is better. you want your body to burn the fat its already storing… if you supply it so readily then it’ll burn what your drinking and not what you are already carrying.”
My weight loss started to stall and when I stopped my BFC for a week everything picked up… So much so I only drink BFC a couple times a week now instead of a couple times a day.
Butter, MTC oil and cream in coffee…yumm. Diet??? Ha ha. Hard to believe thats our breakfast now. I use my BPC to stay in Ketosis (without breaking my fast) until lunch. Almost 6 weeks in. Loving the food, but looking forward to getting rid of the flu like feeling and low energy.
Instead of hot black coffee in the morning I wait until after the first meal of the day, whenever that happens to be, and sip a large tankard of iced coffee with whipping cream and stevia. (Lately I’m experimenting with cold brewing the coffee.)
The safe thing to say is that there is no scientific research proving saturated fat is a health risk. It’s just a likely that seed oils and/or excess carbs are contributing to heart disease, diabetes, etc.
