Bullet proof coffee?

(Chelsea Barnett) #1

Okay so I have to ask. What’s all this talk about bullet proof coffee. What makes it any different than other low carb coffee ? I’ve been drinking the generic k cup in break fast blend and it’s 0 carb. I keep hearing people talk about bulletproof so I had to ask

(Frank) #2

Bulletproof is technically a brand of coffee and other products. In a more generic term it is fats added and emulsified into coffee. For example I’m currently drinking coffee with butter, mct oil, mct powder, heavy cream, cinnamon, cocoa powder, and salt. The coffee is a transport. How you managed to lose 50 lbs without this is beyond me. Ha

(Chelsea Barnett) #3

Haha. Well maybe I need to look into this. Do you purchase it at health stores or regular grocery stores ?
Right now I just do coffee. Almond milk and torani sugar free syrup. 1 carb per cup of coffee because of the almond milk. Does heavy whipping cream have carbs ?

(Frank) #4

Its easiest and most cost effective to get your mct oil on amazon. Heavy cream does not contain carbs to the best of my knowledge. All fat. Nor does butter. I also put a small amount of vanilla in there too. Yeh. It’s got a lot of ingredients. You can go super simple or crazy.

(Chelsea Barnett) #5

Does the mct oil help with weight loss? If so, how ?
I’ve also heard tons of people mention that as well.

(Ethan) #6

Heavy cream does have carb content. 1 cup (8 oz) would still have between 6 and 7g of carbs. Whole milk has something like 12g per cup, so it is a lot less. Also, people generally do not consume an entire cup of HWC. For most, 1/4 of a cup is about what will go in a bulletproof coffee, for about 2g of carbs.

Think of MCT oil as a kind of hack for energy. MCT oil will convert straight to ketones and is pretty hard to store as fat. It’s a very fast energy compared with other fats, so adding it to a morning bulletproof coffee can provide a quick source of energy to kick in before the other fats do.

I’d point you to the vast number of videos on YouTube, some more scientific than others. I’m kind of a follower on this one. It may be helping me but who knows. I just look at it as another clip in the arsenal.

(Frank) #9

I’m only putting 1-2 T at most so maybe that’s why it’s not coming up as any carbs on carb manager?

(Ethan) #10

Right. Anything less than 0.5g per serving will show as 0. Anything less than 1g per serving will show as <1g. 1-2tsp is a low amount. It does make a difference though when you go to Starbucks and order a tall heavy cream latte. They will give you the 12-oz cup with 1 shot of espresso (1.5-2 oz) and fill the rest with steamed heavy cream. Steamed milk would be about 14 ounces total, but with the aeration is probably more like 8 ounces of milk. The issue is that heavy cream will not aerate in the steamer. Thus, they will pour more like 10 ounces of heavy cream into your tall cup, which is 8 or 9g of carbs!

Edit:

This is why I order my heavy cream lattes like this:

Tall: double lungo (long pull) with heavy cream
Grande: triple lungo with heavy cream

A lungo shot will be more like 3-4 oz. Thus, 6-8 oz of coffee+water will get into my latte. Then the heavy cream volume will be about 4-6 oz instead for a tall! A grande will be about 9-12oz of coffee+water and 4-6 oz of heavy cream still.

I just have coffee at home. Mr Coffee, mostly. But I love the HWC. A pint only lasts me about 2 days. So I know I get some serious carbs from that.

Would love an alternative that I actually liked. I was a Bailey’s coffee creamer fan before keto and they don’t make a keto-friendly version (as far as I know).

I would love to find a recipe for a substitute that I could make at home, one that’s actually creamy and tastes good. The watery stuff sold in most stores just doesn’t cut it, have tried quite a few of them, all with hopes that were shattered way before finishing the tiny overpriced container.

This is incorrect. There are carbs in heavy cream. It is just a lower number than lower fat dairy products.

Just as a side note, bullet proof coffee and MCT oil are not remotely necessary to either lose weight or even be ketogenic.

(Frank) #14

This is absolutely correct. I mostly used bpc in the beginning to get me over the hump and adapted and now that I’m close to goal I’m enjoying it as a am treat. In the midst of the majority of fat loss I was black coffee only with a bpc or 2 on the weekends.

(Frank) #15

I stand corrected but in the amounts that I use it, it shows up as 0 on my carb manager.

(Chelsea Barnett) #16

I use almond milk vanilla unsweetened. And it’s only 1 carb for a whole cup. I like a lot of creamer so I use about a cup. And the sugar free torani syrup (zero carb) is what I add for the flavor. It taste just like French vanilla creamer. You should try it

(Ethan) #17

Have you tried hemp milk? It’s much higher fat and tastes amazing–MUCH thicker than almond milk, too.

(Chelsea Barnett) #18

I could never do black coffee. Lol

(Chelsea Barnett) #19

No. I have heard people using it. I’ve never seen it in stores. Where do you purchase it. I’m up to try it

(Ethan) #21

I am not sure what stores you have where you live, but I buy it at MOMs, but I have seen it in Wegmans and maybe even Giant. Don’t do the Pacific brand of hemp milk. It’s fake tasking and not high in fat. The TEMPT brand is better.
