Brushing teeth during EF

#1

There are two triggers I use when I decide to brush my teeth: when I wake up in the morning and after I eat. Now that I do these extended fasts and am only brushing once a day while fasting, the thought occurred to me: “Do I need to brush my teeth if the only thing that went in my mouth since the last time I brushed was water and air?”

Since there are no food particles in my mouth I figure there is less reason to brush but it seems weird to not brush at least daily.

Thoughts?

It would still seam like bacteria would be present just from our natural saliva.

I don’t know, maybe I’m just a bit of a germaphobe here (even though I’m not actually a getmaphobe at all), but I’d say brushing is a must. There’s just an eww factor I can’t get beyond.

Yes, it is impossible to brush away all the bad bacteria in your mouth, so there will always be some left over to do damage. Keep brushing!

Tartar – here’s the wiki text. You don’t wanna see the accompanying photo.

In dentistry, calculus or tartar is a form of hardened dental plaque. It is caused by precipitation of minerals from saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) in plaque on the teeth. … This leads to calculus buildup, which compromises the health of the gingiva (gums).

So I think what @Quarry is saying is it’s probably best to keep brushing. :joy:

woth keto toothpaste of course.
Kidding KIDDING!! :rofl::rofl::rofl:

What about using baking soda to brush ones teeth? Surely this should satisfy the omg hidden sweetners folks. My grandma used to use this instead of tooth paste.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #8

My grandfather used hydrogen peroxide and baking soda.

And I’m sitting here snorting…

I couldn’t help it.

I gotta have fluoride. I’ve had too many kids - they suck the life out of your teeth.

(LeeAnn Brooks) #12

Peroxide? Gross.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #13

Well, you made my day!

Gum health?

It can be harsh, but some people use it for tooth whitening. Actually, my bleaching tray solution is mainly HP.

Now, now. I bleach twice a year for two days, five hours each. Once I overdid it and if you’ve ever had the “my teeth are alive!!” feeling you will never overdo it again. But I read the same thing. But we are talking a few hours a year. And my teeth are great. In fact, I even wrote, in a different post, that for the first time in years, my dentist said I was doing something right because my gums had ZERO inflammation. That’s keto. And I’m sixty and not missing a single tooth . If I get no other benefit from keto, I will be thrilled, to have all my teeth at 80. (God, I sound old!) But that is good info. Thanks for posting that.

Oh, and I am a serious lazy bleacher. The first time was ten years ago for a week. My current plan is an hour a day for five days.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #19

Yeah, I get that I totally contradicted myself. Last time was ten years ago, twice in that year. The main reason I have not been able to get back on track was that for the last ten years I have been unable to stop eating for the two or three hours the bleach takes effect. On keto, I actually can go a few hours. Even considering Invasalign. And that requires that the braces are only out two hours a day!! So, basically, a very short eating window. Working up to that! Actually got busy today and did not eat until 1:00 p.m.

It wasn’t meant to be for you personally, but for the idea of brushing ones teeth with baking soda and peroxide to avoid incidental artificial sweetners.
