Broth

#1

We’ve all heard of the wonderful goodness of broth from Phinney, Volek et al and now I’m trying to get some but all I can find is what I’d call “chemical bags”.

Wish I hadn’t looked at the ingredients list.

Where can I source the good stuff? Or which brand is less worse?

In Australia (Woolworths) I can get Messel, Continental, OXO, Bonox and a few other brands but ?

They have cubes, liquids, powders, …

(Please no tips about DIY, I’ve barely learned how to fry eggs and steam vegetables let’s not push things now. A cube in hot water would stretch my skills).

Harris Farm. Not cheap but good quality bone broths.

Maggie Beer has a line of broths and you could find out where they are sold from her company. I haven’t tried these .

I like a paleo friendly (it says on the label) one sold in Harris Farm by The Stock Merchant which is extremely good chicken and beef bone broth, ultra excellent and just like home made good bone broth and cooked with nothing that is problematical for anyone I know.

Next time you roast some beef, chicken, pork, duck, lamb, or goose, take the bone(s), put them in a slow cooker, fill it up with water, and turn it on. Check it occasionally, and add a bit of water if it seems called for. Twenty-four hours after you start, strain out the bone(s), add a bit of salt, and enjoy your broth!

Hmm, sounds like something even I could make. At least I’ll know what’s in it.

Thanks.

Even Dr. Phinney uses stock cubes in a pinch, but homemade is definitely tastier.

Get an instant pot (lot of lower priced brands and sales) and then you don’t even have to check to put water in it. Cooks broth in 3 hours without any assistance. I’ve found that chicken bones taste the best and make the most gel (which I have read means that the bone goodness was achieved).
Am not a foodie or much of a cook and am incredibly lazy in the kitchen, but this is super easy. I pour the broth into mason jars and store in the fridge. I have a small 3 qt. IP and it makes enough for a week.

Do you have Swanson brand in Australia?

I get this and its low sodium variety. No added nasty ingredients. Only slightly more protein than broth.

Not sure but I’ll look for it.

Thanks.
