Breath mints

Not really food, I know, but this is another one of those things that can sneak those dirty carbs in where your not looking.
So for a long time, I have had an Altoid addiction… which I think is better than cigarettes right ? But the problem is, they are mostly sugar, so therefore, they contain 2 gms of carbs each. Sure, but how many are you going to be eating in a day, right ? Well, in an 8 to 12 hr day of driving (for my work) I might eat 3/4’s of a box… so I dunno… 30 of them ? And that’s 60gm’s of pure sugar carbs, bam ! Just like that ! Not acceptable.

So I got to looking around, and oddly (stupidly) enough, the first thing that came up for “sugar free breath mints” were all natural, Puremints. So I go to their website and they go on and on, with everything you ever wanted to know, except one thing… no mention of sugar ? So I’m guessing they probably use “all natural pure cane sugar” instead of corn syrup… sounds healthy right ? I sent them a note, asking exactly what they sweeten their mints with. And I told them, I’d rather eat aspartame, than ANY kind of sugar. And that honestly, I’d prefer sucrolose (splenda) if given the choice,

Here’s where it gets interesting, Icebreakers mints, made by the Hershey’s company, advertises on every flavor of mints they sell, “Sugarfree” but they neglect to say what they use for sweetener… I’m assuming they don’t have to tell you, because breath mints are not considered food.
I sent them a note too, and I said it was just out of curiosity, because a little artificial sweetener, was better for my use, than any kind of actual sugar.

Anyway, I’d rather eat a little artificial sweetener, than sugar, just like I’d rather eat non grass fed beef, than bread, or farm raised salmon, vs French fries…
Dirty Keto all the way… but Keto none the less.

What about Pur Mints from Amazon? I buy the gum they sell (love the chocolate mint flavour) and it is sugar free and sweetened with Xylitol. Their advert says “kick aspartame” so I think that that will be a good option for you? They come in a few different flavours, as does the gum. I haven’t tried the mints but I really like the gum, and find it helpful during IF times =).

I used to buy Ice Breakers pre-keto, the ingredients are right on the package…they use sorbitol, malitol, and aspartame. Also quick Google search will bring up this info for most products widely available :slightly_smiling_face:

Sorbitol, Maltitol, Maltodextrin, Artificial Flavor, Aspartame (Phenylketonurics: Contains Phenylalanine), Magnesium Stearate, Gum Acacia, Soy Lecithin, and Artificial Color (Blue 1 and Yellow 5).

The first two ingredients are sugar alcohols which are supposedly not going to be processed by our bodies, but YMMV. The third ingredient is derived from starchy sources like potato, rice and corn and probably going to cause a rise in blood glucose levels. And then there’s aspartame, a popular artificial sweetener found in many diet drinks. This AS will not affect blood glucose levels but often causes insulin levels to spike. There’s quite a few studies that suggest aspartame is not helpful in the weight loss department.

Maybe, but i wish I could walk in somewhere to buy, and try them, vs ordering from Amazon…

I think I will start buying these. Not worked about a little artificial sweetener… Just want to cut the sugar.
I’ve eaten them before. Not bad…

Not really. If your talking about Altoids smalls, I Believe they simply make them small enough, that they fall below a half a gram of carbs, so they can then call them sugar free, but I think they are the same ingredients as the larger Altoids… And not any stronger, so to get the same effect, I’d need to eat them 12 at a time, instead of 3…

Interesting…please update with any responses you receive.

Chris there may be an older version that had some. The sugar free ones I bought by accident years ago and threw out we’re normal sized altoids in the same tin as the regular ones with sugar free somewhere on the box I didn’t notice. The smalls have changed recipe using sucralose and sorbitol now apparently, maybe it was something else before because I saw older labels that had 2g. for 3 mints. Here’s a label I dragged off the net and a shot of what Cronometer says about it, for 100 mints.

Okay. Hmmmm. I wish EVERYTHING used sucralose ! Id rather eat sucralose than any other sweetener.
I just wish they were stronger though. I could eat those things 10 at a time, the same way in which I eat regular Altoids 3 at a time. Even those just are not that strong to me…

I eat/ate altoids like candy

Are you at all interested in making your own? There are quite a few recipes out there for homemade sugar free mints. Haven’t found one using sucralose per se, but erythritol and xylitol both seem popular.

The problem with mints that are all sucralose is that in most other cases the primary body of the mint IS a sugar or sugar alcohol. Sucralose is a powder that would be much too concentrated to use as the main body of the mint, hence the maltitol, etc.
