Not saying you CAN’T jump straight into fasting, but it’s much easier if you get fat adapted FIRST. It generally takes 6-8 weeks. Some people get there quicker, some longer.

If it’s something they do frequently, that could be. Technically ketosis comes FAST. I first learned about it when I went for a DOT pee test. I had been busy and hadn’t eaten anything all day, and this was about 4 in the afternoon. The assistant said I tested positive for ketones. I thought I had jusy failed the pee test until the doctor explained that I was in starvation mode and the ketones meant my body was using stored fat for energy. Of course she wasn’t saying it as a positive thing, but I thought the concept sounded great.
The amount of time it takes to become fat adapted depends mostly on how metabolically deranged you are, and that’s why there’s such a range. Once you’ve been there for a bit and have retrained your body, you can get back in pretty quick after taking a break… but who would want to take a break from steak and eggs with a side of bacon?
It probably does, but it’s also miserable to fast in a non fat adapted state. Keto is so easy, theres no reason to force misery.
Also stress levels affect it massively which is why I initially took about four months to adapt.
I have to admit I often add butter to my steaks. It’s so delish! Gee, I even asked for butter to add to my sausage McMuffin/double burger (bunless) I got from McD’s. For whatever reason I do better when I eat more fat. Maybe because I don’t eat large volumes of food so it brings my calories up to where they need to be, but it is working great for me. When I don’t, I stall.
There wasn’t a massive change when adaptation finally crept in, just the pee sticks didn’t work anymore and I had the energy to complete my normal training sessions. It may have been more noticeable if my stress levels had been lower but unfortunately the issue I was working through wasn’t resolved until last March and I have no doubt it interfered with my results / progress.
I can’t advise on insulin resistance I’m afraid, not anything I have experience of.
I’m at maintenance health/weight and am introducing low carb versions of what I used to eat. During my rapid fat loss period (1 month through 4 months) I had a very low fat intake while my body ate itself.
Indie actually ask “isn’t that a good thing?” She replied that it was dangerous…
But it grabbed that hyper focus part of my ADD, and that might I watched a video of Dr Phinny linked from the Diet Doctor site (which at the time actually had very little on Keto, but was LCHF).
That off the cuff remark from the lab tech about ketones, is what got me started.
My other experience with freaking someone out was when I went for a sleep study (to get a c-pap) and the nurse asked if I wanted anything to eat (this is Friday night), and I replied “no thanks, I’m fasting. I haven’t eaten since Monday.” She almost forced an IV into me. The only thing that stopped her was her own doubt of what she thought she knew. By her calcs, I should have been dead or in a coma by then, certainly not awake talking to her.
Brats, chicken, Peppers, small can of diced tomatoes (nas), 4tbs butter, 1 bullion cube.
When cooking, place brats in the oven,
Chicken and pepper to bite size on stove top all together with the other ingredients. Simmer until the brats are done.
Slice brats and add amount to ratio.
Should be a bit brothy.
Serve in a bowl and top with 1 egg yolk then gently stir to combine.
It will be hot enough for the yolk and this replaces cheese.
And for anyone else, add rice.
My own recipe idea!
