Brand Spanking New & Confused

I would read or listen on audible to Dr. Fung/Jimmy Moore’s book, The Complete Guide to Fasting. Ann Bosworth’s any way you can is an interesting read with a story woven into Some easy u dermatitis biochemistry.

Agree with some of the other posts, no fruit or fruit juice, you may as well eat spoons of sugar, it will knock you out of ketosis. Your gut has been idle for some time so refeeding your first couple meals with foods that are low in fiber is a good idea. I like a full fat plain yogurt like Fage’ Total. Coffee with a good medium chain fatty acid powder. Read the labels carefully, some of these powders have dexstrose (sugar) as a filler, also make sure they spell out that the fats are 8-10 chains long. These short and medium chain fats get to take an express trip to your liver and are nearly instantly turned into key tones. Long chain fats like butter and cream are great too, they just take a longer path through your body to get to your liver. Coconut oil has a mix of medium chain and long chain fats so it works as well, I just don’t like it in my coffee. Unsweetened whipped cream is another refeeding favorite or mine as well as olives. Medium hardness cheese and eggs are also good refeeders.

You mentioned your love of meat, me too, but I had to switch from lean cuts of beef to fattier cuts like a rib eye also sausage, bacon and eating chicken with the skin. For a great list of recipes hit: http://2ketodudes.com/recipes.aspx

I used the free version for months before I finally decided to pay for it.

I have used MFP for years and I would be interested to know why you feel this way. I have found it to work well for letting me see the information I need if you set it up right. Looking at Cronometer it seems to have more of a breakdown of nutrients but I haven’t delved deeper into it yet.

My biggest problem with MFP is that you REALLY have to look to find the accurate items. Too many people often just put in the info they care about rather than make it a more accurate entry. I don’t know if there is a way that cronometer accounts for that but I will look into it more.

That said, as I don’t own a cell phone let alone a smartphone. I access both via Firefox and not an app on the phone. I know that apps are not typically the exact same as directly accessing things via a website.

I am a little confused. I have used MFP for years, accessing it via a web browser (Firefox for me) and it has never cost me anything. It is fully functional IMHO as it is, with the paid subscription simply adding some tweaks and bells and whistles so to speak.

LOL, my wife gets this too if she takes one of her medications too late in the evening… Or, strangely enough, when she enjoys the cannabis strain called Trainwreck.

Aside from that, I think you might find doing 20:4 intermittent fasting pretty doable if you are already at this point of where you think you want to go. Remember that IF is not about calorie restriction. You still eat the same amount of food you would normally in the correct macros. Once that is comfortable and routine you can change it up and do OMAD or 22:2 (which is essentially OMAD for most cases). Then skipping an eating day and doing a 42 or 46 hour fast if you feel that is the direction you need to go.

I need not answer

Well, OK, I will. If you’re tracking for informational purposes, you need to be as accurate as possible. As you say, MFP isn’t even close to that.

Chronometer has a tightly-controlled food database that will ONLY be altered by the staff at the app dev company.

But it’s also easy to add your own foods/recipes to, and if you subscribe, has awesome reporting functions.

Hi All - today was rough. Day 7 officially done and dusted, but i was extremely tired and fatigued all day likelly on account of only sleeping 2 hours last night and then my indian ringnecks deciding TODAY of all days they want my full attention or else… :frowning:

Getting ready to try this sleep thing again, just waiting for my super tasty no sugar no milk no calories chamomile tea to cool down /endsarcasm. Hoping for success tonight as i nearly caused WW3 today at home with my grouchiness. Luckily all were very forgiving and nobody offered me a cookie either - so kudos to my fam for supporting me through the good and the bad :+1:

Thanks for the advice  how do you know when you are officially fat adapted?

Thanks for the recipe list, @FatNucci I’ve bookmarked it, but i am staying away from recipes for now. Dont need to push my boundaries any further than i have been LOL.
Everyone advises to break the fast with juice, and the only juice i can think of is fruit juice. No blender, no making any weird Shrek concoctions for me, no siree :expressionless: Bone broth is it, i suppose. :woman_facepalming:

@Janie i have no trial offers on chrono, but i also am not eating yet, so will fiddle with it a bit more later. Definitely going to get the paid version as the free one is very limited.

@UncaToddly, on the MFP i got, i could not even search foods on the free version. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
Thanks for the new word - OMAD. Thought i’ve read it all, clearly not LOL.

Goodnight all & Rest well when you get there xx

https://idmprogram.com/fasting-a-history-part-i/ This is a link to Dr. Jason Fungs blog, particularly the first post in a 30 or so part series on fasting. There could be some new nuggets of information in there to help you out. Hit the fasting group in this forum, lots of good Keto ways to break your fast and not undo the work you have done.

You asked when you know you are fat adapted. It takes 4-8 weeks of eating Keto for most people to get mostly adapted. The longer you eat Keto the more efficient your body gets at producing the right amount of keytones you need and your cells to efficiently use the keytones. You are no doubt making Ketones now but your body is still learning how to use them efficiently. Pick up some inexpensive Keto sticks at a pharmacy or order them online. Your body is new to ketosis so it’s making more key tones than your cells know how to use and they are coming out in your urine most likely. If you test your urine with the sticks you can confirm this. As you become adapted and more cells in your body learn to use keytones less and less will come out in your urine, again the sticks can help you prove this. Every cell in your body adapts to burning keytones at a different rate, your brain cells are some of the last to adapt. In the mean time your liver has you covered. Its using a process of gluconeogenesis to make the glucose those slower to adapt cells need.

I knew I was fully fat adapted when at the gym on a fasted early morning stomach I had no problems doing weight training. It took me several months. Also when after I ate I did not get tired and want a nap.

You need to research what is a carb is and where in food they show up. Keep carbs to less then 20g / day. Avoid fruits and fruit juices and many vegetables like potatoes and carrots. Focus on above ground leafy green vegetables like spinach, arugula lettuce, kale, broccoli, and cauliflower. Tomatoes have some carbs so early on don’t eat them. Onions and sweet or bell peppers should be used sparingly.

You can get the page 4 food list from Dr. Eric Westman here. It is free. He has been helping people with keto for more than 10 years.

I’m keto. I smoke. I stay in ketosis. I’ve also lost at least 20 lbs since I started. Haven’t weighed myself lately. Didn’t weigh when I started.
My last known weight prior to starting was 187.

I’m currently wearing a skirt that used to fit. It’s now 2 inches too big.

Good morning all! Slept better last night - got about 5 hours in. This itchiness is still persisting and becoming disruptive… but still no spots (i’ve researched this keto rash business). Very confused.

But more unsettling, i have a dry mouth, almost foaming (feels like it wants to) this morning, no matter how much water i drink. Did i contact rabies somewhere :open_mouth: or (please say it is) is this a normal thing that occasionally happens on a fast?

I’ve found two soups that i am going to try - a cauliflower soup and a mushroom soup for day two. This should work fine, right? On day three, omelette etc etc (only keto foods).

Thanks @daddyoh, i am definitely sticking to keto

@Gracebowen - Thanks for the confirmation. I still plan to quit smoking as i am doing this mainly to improve my skin, and i’ve received some solid advice here already on how to do that without doing an extended fast. Somehow i feel that no matter what i do, as long as i am stuck on nicotine, my skin will likely never be free from eczema completely… so i have to tackle that beast! But i am positive that once i am a proper Keto Peep, it will be a piece of cake, as lots of people seems to have found it easy to kick the habit on this diet.

AND agreed! The best way to tell if you’ve lost weight is to try on your “when i am skinny” clothes, LOL. I dont own a scale! The weight loss will be a bonus for me, but i am kind of nervous about losing too much weight above the belt.

Have a very skinny upper body, but elephant trunks for legs (so my body build is wacky & weird, just like me :+1:) When i was in my early 20ies, someone offended me and as a result i refused to eat proper meals for about two months. When my dad saw me, he was so upset; said he will force feed me if i dont start eating - apparently i looked anorexic. BUT ALAS, my legs was still even then, what you would politely call “curvaceous”. Fun fun

a definite ‘red bull’ variety. Unfortunately, it also kills my satiety signals and destroys my willpower. So…for me only on rare occasions after I’ve already had a feast.

I use lose it. If I want to eat something I can scan the barcode and get nutrition info and can look up store brands. It has worked well for me. I have lost 120 lbs since August 17 of 2018. Cut my insulin and a1c to normal levels. Was 6 bottles of insulin a month and now I bottle every two months now a1c 12-14 to 6.5. I also fast 16 8 daily and w4 hour once a week. Love my new lifestyle. Will never go back.
