BPC Experiment n=1

#1

So one of those BPC is the devil tussles has come up over on KickarseKetoBitches. I don’t drink them (yak) but I am interested in the tussle so I am going to do an experiment which basically equates to me drinking one a day on top of my usual daily food to see what will happen.

So I have undertaken to test the theory that BPC can impact weight loss. I am approaching from a different angle but the theories spoken of should still apply.

I weight around 70kg (within about 500g each way) and have maintained that steadily for a good few weeks. I could easily tolerate being lower and have been but that would involve active tightening of what I ate and I am not sure I want to do that. I decided a while back to eat as I want to sustainably and my weight will settle where it settles. I have been 63 briefly last year and then things went a bit pear shaped and carby! I went up to about 78 and have lost that 8 since October last year. There is no point in me tracking over the experiment because I haven’t tracked before but I can tell you what typical day has been over these last weeks so you can get an idea of what I eat.

Breakfast - between 1 and two Toulouse sausages (quite big - maybe 150g), mushrooms and an egg friend in butter.
Dinner - varies but something like a steak and greens in butter. tonight was chicken crisp pizza.
Snacks - I have been munching on nuts and cheese on and off. I have also been eating dark chocolate (85%) on and off.

My experiment is to add the equivalent fat of a BPC to my daily food. Not a BPC because it would make me vomit!

So week 1 will be 2 T coconut oil chased with my usual tea just before breakfast. I am thinking this will override any over-fullness that will mean I don’t want breakfast.

So basically I am adding ‘unnecessary’ fat, potentially over satiety - that is to be seen.

Maybe then I will switch up the oils - ghee, olive oil and see if there is any change.

In theory - if the theory is that BPCs are ‘bad’ and slow or stop weightloss - I will gain weight. My body will prioritise this extra fat and use it first, leaving an excess which will… what?

Any thoughts on the above? Any changes you want me to make or things to observe above the obvious? What do you think will happen?

My only problem is this part:

You are saying you may be purposely overeating?
Maybe I did not read this correctly but are you intending to replace your breakfast with the fat or is it in addition to?

So week 1 will be 2 T coconut oil chased with my usual tea just before breakfast.

If you will still eat breakfast I don’t see what the point of the experiment is other than proving that eating more than necessary makes you slow or stop weight loss.

Not knowing the argument, I am curious what the argument is about; stating that having fat in sausage is ok but fat in coffee is bad seems pretty far-fetched.

Edit: I reread the first part and it seems you do want to just add a bunch of fat before breakfast, I really don’t have any idea now what this is trying to accomplish

One of the major contentions with BPC culture is drinking calories, rather than eating them. Your body processes beverages differently than solid food. People who are anti-BPC aren’t anti coconut oil, butter, ghee, etc. They are against replacing meals with a fatty beverage. Your experiment would be more in line with how people use BPC if you drank BPC/T/Cocoa, because it’s about drinking calories without nutrition. The comparison is that the reason soda is bad is that it is sweet without nutrients. Many who are anti-BPC are anti-empty calories.

I am seeing whether it will have any impact. I don;t think it will. BPCs get derided left, right and centre. Most people I see drink them as meal replacement. I am going to have one a day as an extra so it cannot be said it is a meal replacement. I do not think adding this extra fat will have any impact at all re my weight. I am basically doing what is accused of BPC drinkers of doing - drinking unnecessary fat - to see what happens.

(John) #5

I get over 50% of my calories from beverages and have for 6 months, what is supposed to be happening to me that is so terrible?

#6

I will be drinking them - 2 T coconut oil in a liquid state, chased by tea. So effectively a BPT. So yes - drinking empty calories, needless fat, however you want to put it. From that POV anyway.

(John) #7

Ok so you want to know whether the extra fat gets used, stored or passed through?

I assume it will have an effect, but no more than the added calories.

#8

Ah. You may have read me wrong. I don;t think you are doing anything wrong at all. I am expecting to prove that there is nothing wrong with adding a BPC a day from a weight loss perspective.[quote=“jmbundy, post:7, topic:8911”]
I assume it will have an effect, but no more than the added calories.

So you think I will gain weight because I have upped calories?

(John) #9

Yes and no, 100 calories or so is pretty negligible, but if it is strictly added and nothing else changes then I don’t think the calories will magically disappear.

From my old philosophy days, if you think 1 BPC per day won’t have an affect at all then will 2, 3 or even 10? If so, then there must be either

  1. A slight effect that occurs all the time, including from just having one, or
  2. There has to be a mechanism that doesn’t happen at 1 that does happen at 2 or 4 or whatever the count is

Said another way, if you think 1 doesn’t matter and 10 does, you have to able to point out what the difference is and where it occurs.

250 in 2T coconut oil so 1750 over the week

I would say that is answered by satiety.

I am purposefully defying satiety (probably) to make a point. Or to be showed up to be wrong. One or the other!

(John) #11

Will be interesting to see, I think there is no other option than to gain wait if eating 1,750 calories more than you need over the course of a week. Really don’t see why it wouldn’t.

(Genevieve Biggs) #12

I don’t know. It’s not my position, just making sure it is represented.

#13

Oh don;t worry. I know the position all too well. That is why I am doing it

#14

In that KickarseKetoBitches group you mentioned?

#15

No. We are way too civilised for that!

(Tammy Kidd) #16

I am following!!!

(Ashley Haddock) #17

I just caught up on “the convo” (holy hell :joy:) and can’t wait to see your results!

(Candace) #18

I drink BPC because it is a way for me to get nutrients that I cannot incorporate during my day. In order for me to eat enough calories, I would have to force myself to eat (small banana stomach). Plus, I actually like it.

#19

Lots of people have lots of reasons - all good. I am the BPC defender!!! Just trying to prove a point with a silly little n=1.

(Candace) #20

I think it is a great idea. I’m doing a lot of different n=1 (technically n=2 because my husband is a guinea pig lol). I look forward to reading your results.
