Bone broth with protein okay?

#1

Is it a bad idea to drink a cup of bone broth with protein while fasting?

First, what is your goal for fasting? Second, what protein and how much?

Goal is to break a weight loss stall. Chicken Bone broth from Costco has 9 grams of protein per serving

If you need it, do it. It won’t be that detrimental for a weight-loss-stall fast. Stretch the fasting muscle, and perhaps in time you won’t need it. How long are your fasts?

I intermittent fast every day from 8 PM to 11 AM. This is only my 2nd 24 hour fast. I find them a little scary. The last one was easy though with 2 cups of broth. It didn’t do a thing for my weight loss stall though.

Dont stress over the bone broth. It’s more valuable to drink it and make it through than to stress about it. I was terrified the first time I went 24 hours. I was again terrified when I went 48 hours. The same when I went 72 hours. I used bone broth to help stretch the added time as I reached new goals. I don’t use bone broth anymore, and I am comfortable fasting twice a month for 5 days each time. I’ve done a single 7-day fast once and will do it again in March. The first time was uncomfortable on day 6, but no longer terrifying. I don’t see a need to go beyond 7 days.

I think you should do what feels right. Remember, the 50-100 calories of protein and fat you are consuming won’t counteract much for weight loss. The difference between when you feast and when you fast is still so significant that it will be ok.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Ethan for your response. I was hungry and went with a cup of coffee and ½ tsp of MCT oil. If I need it, I’ll have a cup of bone broth tonight. THANKS

My advice is the same I have heard Dr. Fung say and in his and Jimmy Moore’s books. Dr. Fung says that for weight loss, fasting won’t really be broken with a small crutch like bone broth, a few tablespoons of chia seeds, or MCT oil. As you get better, you will find that you need fewer things to help you through. Dr. Fung does say that if fasting for autophagy, we really don’t know what will prevent autophagy, so the safest thing is to only drink water for that.

I did my first 18 hour fast the day before yesterday. I just had lunch (2:00-2:30) and plan to not eat again until lunch tomorrow (almost 24 hours ). My first fast was bracketed by chocolate avocado pudding… supper and lunch the next day, with only BPC and water and hot tea (only stevia sweetened, I promise !) in between. Today I had a can of pink salmon. The last time I had this for lunch, I didn’t eat until 9:45 the next day. I wouldn’t have eaten then; but it was a crazy short-handed day and I didn’t know how late lunch might run. Tomorrow, I feel better prepared; physically and mentally . Good luck on yours, Tex !

Thank you!

I just crossed the 23 hour mark … only had BPC , tea, and a cup of chicken bouillon and water since 2:30 yesterday afternoon … my tummy says it could eat now… but it’s probably nearly another hour until my lunch relief gets back from her lunch…going to keep drinking water and hope I don’t have to “go” before she gets back. The not fun thing about being the switchboard at a bank is that you can’t leave your desk unless someone sits in for you. (But I wouldn’t trade it for any other position, lol .) I get an hour today, so I’m planning on a gentle refeed of baby spinach salad with sliced black olives, hemp hearts, and full fat salad dressing. How is yours going, Tex ?

Thanks for asking Razor, 40 hours in the books and it wasn’t even hard. Over the two days I had 5 cups of coffee with a small amount of HWC and a total of 1 tsp of mct oil and 1 cup of regular broth. I have decided that I’m doing 40 hours every week, how are you doing.
