Bone and Veg Broth

(Chris) #1

I’ll be doing a bone and veg broth this week and wondered now that I’ve just started Keto, what items should I leave out. I normally do 2 pots, one meat & bones and the other veg and then blend the veg and strain the bones and then combine the both and freeze into portions.

Ox Tail, onions, leeks, turnip, parsnip, garlic, ginger, celery, kale, carrots.

I’m guessing that I should drop the carrots, parsnips and turnips but what about the onions and leeks?

Is it just a general purpose cooking broth or broth to drink while fasting? You’re right that onions and leeks are carby but a few isn’t going to be a huge problem for a general purpose broth. I’ve drank veggie broth while fasting in a pinch and the carbs made me hungry. Stick to bone broth with a little butter if it’s for fasting, otherwise leave the leeks and onions.

Thanks, I was hoping to keep the onions, leeks and garlic in for the flavor / nutrition but if there’s a chance it will make me hungry, I’ll drop them - My plan was to have coffee with MCT in the morning and this very fatty oxtail / veg broth at lunchtime to keep me going and a bigger meal in the evening on about 3 days of the week to start with.

I’m sort of suffering at the moment (day 5) Feel very foggy and disorientated, shouldn’t really be driving to be honest! - I am eating enough fat but still probably adapting to the ketone switchover.

So because of that I thought I’d include the foods that always seem to make me feel good - I’m doing a big shop in about an hour and I thought I’d include Bone broth / soup and lamb or calf liver in my plans for the next week.

So basically you don’t think you’re fat adapted yet but you want to try IF a few days a week with the aid of coffee with HWC in coffee and some bone/veggie broth? Do I have that right?

Thanks Rian - That was a while ago, I’m now on day 11 and feeling great. Those first few days for me were really hard

Great effort to get yourself into ketosis. People’s experience of the transition do vary a lot and the keto 'flu can range from a mild few days to a very difficult few weeks.

Some people just say ‘keto didn’t work for me’ when they didn’t push through that stage. They miss all the benefits.

I mean reply to the actual comment and not just the thread. We are here trying to help each other, that sounded pretty hostile on your part FYI

If you’re only two weeks in I would be eating a lot more and eating a ton of fat. Fasting will come naturally later.

Yes thanks Mike, I did that early in the second week onwards, funnily enough, I think it was when I started to really up my fat intake and eat cream, (the solid type called clotted cream here in the UK) that I started to feel a lot better.

My problem over the last few years is that I’ve been very aware of all the lies and BS regarding butter, saturated fat etc and have actually studied alternate health in many ways, shapes and forms. So my diet has been full of saturated fat. I’ve cooked with coconut oil / lard, ghee and butter for years and eaten it by the tablespoonful.

BUT, very stupidly, despite my better judgement and knowing damn well that it was bad, continued to eat those lovely addictive carbs and sugar in abundance. 2 teaspoons of sugar in tea and coffee multiple times a day etc etc. So recently it got to the point that when I ate in the evening I would crash, literally have to lie down. I suspected it was metabolic syndrome, bought a blood pressure devise and the results were really shocking.

Anyway, my body didn’t like being cut off from that sugar supply too much, that’s for sure  - It’s never had NO sugar and fast carbs before!

Very grateful for all the informative posts throughout this forum as well as the very helpful encouragement and advice - it’s really is a fantastic resource. Looking forward to doing some exercise as well as trying some of the lovely recipes posted here.

I used to have 2 sugars like you described. Cutting that was step 1 of my journey.

Now I can’t stand the stuff.
