Body temperature

I am about 2 weeks into ketosis, and this is my first time doing a Keto diet. I am curious about how the body starts burning fat from the body. I have noticed I get hot flashes and I am a man. I am wondering if these hot flashes are my body burning stored fat? Thanks

I don’t get hot flashes per se but I do get “meat sweats” from consuming lots of fats/proteins. (Male here as well).

Others on the forums have mentioned going camping and eating a lot of protein before bed to stay warm in their tent.

What I’ve noticed is that if I eat a late meal, say at 1800, it’s not uncommon to wake up in a full on body sweat, what I suspect is the body burning off excess protein and/or fat.

I’ve had a similar experience when fasting, waking up in the middle of the night, having gone to bed freezing, I’ve woken up in a full body sweat, my thinking is that the body was accessing body fat- which leads me to believe that your hypothesis is likely correct, that your hot flashes are due to body accessing the body fat stores.

Are you made uncomfortable or otherwise trying to prevent these occurrences?

Best of luck to you in your keto journey!

Tim

I know what you’re talking about but no clue the exact cause. I know I get it if i down a bunch of mct oil or coconut. I figured it was just a ton of energy mobilization at once with no insulin response to store it. I feel that the increased body temp and increased energy is why calories in calories out doesn’t seem to be the primary rule for me. Well, technically it’s still calories in calories out, but calories going out in ways we don’t think of. So, no deficit required to avoid fat storage. But i really don’t know. I kinda get flushed eating a bunch of bacon too

That works for me as well. If I’m cold, have cold hands etc., I’ll have some MCT oil and bamn, the heat is on!

In the latest podcast Richard spoke about the “metabolic haircut” that protein takes in the act of it being converted to energy, I think that’s what we are experiencing, the conversion of protein into energy with “excess” (as you said, the body can’t store it at the time for whatever reason) being converted/burned off, kind of like an oil well (we humans love our analogies don’t we?) burning off the natural gas that it doesn’t want/need.

Maybe, but not in the case of drinking mct oil. No protein involved…very little processing required for the mct to get into the blood stream. I had hoped my gluconeogenisis was so minor in the amount required that i wouldn’t even notice. But no clue

Good point, the fat in MCT oil is mostly passing through the digestive system right?

It would seem there is some energy being created by it if the rise in body temp is any indication. Maybe an experiment of body temp pre and post MCT oil consumption…

Probably a lot of crazy science that’s over my head going on. I just know taking mct and butter will get me jacked at the gym

I have no idea, but, have noticed that as I lose body fat I am cold and really struggling in our Michigan winter weather. It could also be due to the other meds I take, so…

Same here, in VA beach, VA (with 10" of snow on the ground…). I’ve had to almost quit IF for a few weeks, the cold weather plus low calories and a lower body fat = misery. I’m in maintenance mode and not fretting any changes in waistline etc until the weather warms back up, I’m not dropping keto, just laying off some of the more extreme stuff. Having fat earlier in the day really helps me cope (HWC, MCT oil, bacon grease right off the spoon…).

I had severe hot flashes but not from keto. It was from low Testosterone. If I were you I’d get your t level checked next time you go to the Dr, if only to rule that out. Low t can cause a host of other problems too that you may not be aware of.

The heat rush I was feeling was around my mid section, thats why I though it might be something about burning fat stores. I have been adding a lot of coconut oil to my coffee maybe it’s that. Thanks for the feed back all
