Blood donations - concentration levels?

(Bowden) #1

Hello, can you guys do an episode on blood donation, and how it affects cortisol, blood glucose levels and anyting else.
I donate plasma every 2 weeks and was wondering if this concentrates my blood glucose levels or has the opposite effect?
I did google it, but I know I won’t be the only one in podcast land that likes how the KETO DUDES deliver science.
Love the work you guys do for us fat munchers,I like many others feel like you have shown me the light … in the pantry the fridge and on nutrition.
Keep calm and keto on, from Wollongong - Australia.

I would be interested in hearing about this topic too.

Interesting question. I know you can reduce iron levels donating

Yes, my sister has heamachromatosis… or something like that, she goes regularly to keep her iron levels in check- that’s whole blood donations

Been a regular platelet/plasma donator for a decade now. Every two weeks I have the opportunity to save a life! I’ve been curious about health advantages or disadvantages of this practice as well. Thanks for all you do!

I remember reading here that giving blood is a Hba1c hack since you’re building new blood and have less older dead cells. I don’t know how accurate that is though.

(Sjur Gjøstein Karevoll) #7

If that’s the case then it’s something you should probably refrain from doing for a few months before you check your Hba1c to make sure the reading is accurate. High Hba1c itself is not dangerous, it’s what it implies you need to beware of.

Plasma shouldn’t really do anything (no blood cells)

I’m interested in this one as well. I’ve recently started giving plasma twice per week (just like I did back in college) and my runs on the first weekend after my Wednesday/Friday donations were decidedly not as good. Small sample size, but I’m still wondering how much protein I should be replenishing after giving plasma to avoid the decreased performance.

Yeah jayerdahl, that’s something that I’m interested in.
Do you replenish/ need to, and if so how much and of what micronutrients?
