BHB Powder Failure, but C8 Oil for the WIN!

(Failed) #1

EDITED TO CLARIFY; Hubby’s blood glucose/blood ketone (GKI) is quite high 7.9, so we decided to see if exogenous ketones would help. I bought a can of Dr. Boz Keto BHB Powder from Amazon.

Here’re his results after I got the BHB powder a few days later.
His starting blood ketone level was 2.7.
1 hr after ingesting 1 scoop of Dr. Boz Keto BHB Powder: 2.5
2 hrs: 2.6
3 hrs: 2.0
Also, this gave him diarrhea

It’s being returned.

This morning, we did a test using 4 g of caprylic acid (C8 oil)
Starting blood ketones < .1
2 hrs later 2.9

One sample isn’t definitive, but what a difference.

Interesting. On a side note I didnt think 2.7 would be considered low.

My apologies, I edited my post to clarify when I was talking about. His GKI was 7.9. His blood sugar is a little bit too high and his ketones are a little bit too low for his BG.

(Joey) #5

Darn that spulchik … Now your husband’s kittens are too low. :cat:

(Failed) #6

Very interesting, thank you for posting it.

Gotta love autocorrupt. It usually changes it to Keytones, but I like “kittens” much better.

PS even though it types Keytones when I say ketones, it’s underlined Keytones as a misspelling, sigh.

(Joey) #8

… and as misspellings go, that would be correct

But regardless of spelling, you haven’t mentioned why your husband is taking exogenous ketones. Could you elaborate a bit on the rationale for doing so?

He’s 77 and has COPD & diabetes, along with heart damage from a heart attack about 12 years ago. He’s doing keto, but is so insulin resistant that he’s having trouble getting his GKI where it needs to be for healing.

(Joey) #11

@DeeCS Thank you for that additional context. From everything I’ve read about exogenous BHB, exploring that path makes sense. Best wishes for his success in finding the best route forward!

The ketones in a can didn’t work and are being returned to Amazon. The caprylic acid (C8) oil is amazing though.

For an experiment on me, I took 2.4 g. I was already happy with my numbers, but wanted to see what would happen.
Before
BG 89 / 4.9
Ketones 3.3
GKI 1.5
Dr Boz ratio 27

After 1 hour
BG 83 / 4.6
Ketones 3.2
GKI 1.4
Dr Boz ratio 25.9

After 2 hours
BG 85 / 4.7
Ketones 4.1
GKI 1.2
Dr Boz ratio 20.7

It seems that the caprylic acid (C8) oil affects BG as well as the ketone levels.

Another, possibly related, bonus: for the past week or so, my temperature has stayed below 98°F / 36.6. Two hours after taking the mct oil, it was 98.6 / 37!

I wonder if the above effects are sustainable, cumulative, or level off. When I work my way up to a larger amount of mct oil and more frequently, what will the results be? I don’t know, but it will be interesting to find out.

I took another dose of caprylic acid (c8) oil about 4 hrs after the first one. So far, no digestive issues.

I can’t believe how back to the old me from 5 years ago I feel. I’m disabled and mostly sedentary. However, after taking the 2nd dose of mct oil, I cooked hamburgers, loose burger, chaffles, did the dishes, and a few other chores hubby usually has to do because I just don’t have the energy.

Crying tears of happiness and hope! I may be up all night, but I don’t care!
It’s been an hour & 15 mins.
BG 85 / 4.7
Ketones 4.8
GKI 1.0
Dr Boz ratio 17.7

Great, Dee =). I am glad that you have so much energy.

(Failed) #16

It’s so much different. I feel like myself again. I didn’t realize how tired and exhausted I was all of the time. And after starting keto, I never got any of the energy that people were talking about, and I figure it’s just because I’m older.

I apologize for not answering your email yet. I’ve had a lot going on and wasn’t in any position to follow up on it.

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #17

What MCT oil are you using? And how much?
I’m thinking of using smaller doses spread out over the day.

(Failed) #18

I’ve got a bottle of Clean MCT oil 100% Pure C8 Caprylic Acid on order from Amazon, but currently hubby & I are taking 4 Now Caprylic Acid gelcaps (4 g mct oil, 1 g in each gelcap) at a time.

I tried fewer gelcaps at a time, but didn’t get much of a rise in ketones. If I figured it correctly, the recommended dose is 12 g at a time. I’m hoping to work up to that, but maybe I don’t need to do that. The raised ketones and lowered BGs seem to taper off between 3 and 4 hours.

The liquid is caprylic acid, but cost much less than the gelcaps per gram. For the same amount of caprylic acid as in the liquid ($34.94) the gelcaps would cost $85.92.

They should work the same, since they are both caprylic acid.

There is a warning for taking it the first time. It can go through you until you get used to it.

But GKI is only ONE measure. What was his blood sugar? This implies 383 (us) OMG?

Your job is to LOWER Glucose not amp up ketones to get there.

You want to see his glucose coming down

The formula is Glucose/18/Ketones…, so G/18/2.7=7.9
G=7.9182.7=383!

I would do more fasting to get his glucose down. Not his ketones up.

Am I missing something?

(Failed) #20

What are you referencing? Perhaps I misstated something.

I know the formula

BG WAS 128 / 7.1
Ketones 0.9
GKI 7.9
Dr Boz ratio 142.2
