Beverage alternatives to water?

(Marianne) #1

Never been a fan of drinking plain water (in fact, I never did), but it is the one small sacrifice I have had to make and that’s fine with me. My husband just started and he is looking for any alternatives to water as a beverage (no broth, etc.). He doesn’t drink tea or coffee. I read the labels on almond and coconut milk and those don’t seem to have enough fat. Are there really any other viable choices or should we really just stick to water?

Water, and you can try adding a bit of salt (kills two birds).

And electrolytes, of course.

I like sparkling water as an alternative. Still water just with carbonation and, if you want, a touch of flavor.

Water does not have fat either :woman_shrugging: Not everything you consume has to have fat in it.

I get flavored sparking water - unsweetened, no calores. Lemon, lime, orange. Makes for a nice soft drink replacement. You still get the experience of getting something out of the fridge, popping the top, the fizz, and some flavor.

I also will take a lemon or lime, cut it in half, and squeeze the juice into a 2L container of water. Or a whole lemon or lime, or half of one and half of the other. After a while of doing non-sweetened stuff, water with lemon in it tastes sweet to me.

I love unsweetened almond milk. I generally drink one 8 oz glass of it during the day.

I also happen to like coffee, black tea, green tea, and herbal teas, so that helps. And I have always liked drinking water. We grew up with ice water as primary beverage on the dinner table in my house.

You can do various infused waters - slice up a cucumber and drop the slices in a jug of water, or various other things. Google “infused water” for TONS of ideas. Keep in mind, you are just floating stuff in the water to allow it to become flavored, so it’s not picking up all of the calories from the content.

Out of curiosity, what exactly does he WANT to be drinking? How was he getting moisture before?

We have sparkling water on hand, usually Perrier. It comes in several natural flavors, strawberry, lime, peach… It’s carbonated so a little spicy if you liked soda in the past. The flavors are very mild. Just a hint. It’s nice in the summer. Then, the usuals of tea and coffee. And my last common drink is Brenda’s keto-aide recipe from this forum. I actually really like the flavor of the slightly sweet and salty combined and I also add a splash of apple cider vinegar. This gives me several options throughout the day.

There is a new-to-me drink called Hint, I found it at our local Natural Grocers, it is water with essence of fruit. So no sweetener at all, no sugar or carbs…I tried and really liked the watermelon, it’s a very subtle taste, but on the day that I just absolutely wanted something different it was a welcome refreshing change with zero worry or guilt! They have a variety of fruit flavors. Also it is not carbonated.

I often make a couple of 20 oz travel cups of green tea like Oolong, Bancha, Jasmine or Genmaicha and decant small cups several times from it. You can reuse the tea for up to three brews. I don’t add anything to it. It also gives an even caffeine response compaired to coffee. Not jittery at all. And it has healthy antioxidants and health compounds too. Staves off hunger and is soothing to the stomach. Try it. :cowboy_hat_face:

I drink a lot of water with these electrolytes… I love them. They have some sweetener, but it doesn’t seem to impact me. They have lots of different flavours to try. Although they seem a bit expensive (roughly 20c (Aus) per tablet), I compare this vs what I would pay for a commercial soft drink. So, relatively cheap.

The only problem is that they taste so good, my non-keto wife has taken a liking to them, and they have a habit of disappearing! So I buy them in bulk!

These are all alternatives to water I would have (but I also have no issue with tea/coffee or plain water and that’s mainly what I drink).

  1. Plain soda water with a little ACV- a little reminiscent of cider.
  2. Diet cola/ginger ale/lemonade etc (a rare treat).
  3. Water infused with aromatics like a cinnamon stick/orange peel can be lovely too.
  4. Herbal tea, chilled.
  5. Plain soda water with a twist of lemon/lime juice is very refreshing.

Although he drank water, it wasn’t much - probably 20 oz. when he works out. He used to drink a lot of Light Cran Grape Juice (That was all I drank, too, but I’d dilute it 50% with water.) Full strength Coke sometimes as a treat, lately a gallon of choc. milk (not at a time). He’s not overweight (but wants to lose a slight belly paunch), but he really loves sugar.
