Im sure this has been asked before but is there a keto book or two that you found helpful?
Best Keto Book
Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung. Maybe not exactly Keto related but it will help you “get it”.
I loved Nina Teicholz’s The Big Fat Surprise. It was another huge step in improving my health (particuarly regarding eliminating inflammation) when I began to rigorously eliminate seeds oils from my diet. I also found her extensive research into how the US government’s nutritinal guidelines have been hijacked without regards to any sound scientific justification to be compelling. It has left me incredibly leary of “expert opinion” when it comes to… well… anything.
Edited for typos and grammar
While not specifically marketed as a Keto book, I find that the recommendations in Undoctored by William Davis affect me even more positively than just following a Ketogenic diet (which is saying a lot because Keto has been a wonderful experience for me).
It’s ironic - apparently, there is some contention between Davis and the Keto community but I don’t get it. I understand he has stated that one should not stay on a Ketogenic diet long-term; however, I think the recommended WOE in Undoctored is Keto on steroids: High Fat Low Carb but with the complete elimination of grains.
The effect on me is even a further reduction of inflammation and cravings. If I eat 40g of daily carbs, I sustain ketosis, but I find I feel better when those carbs come from vegetables than from bread.
+1. Great starting point.
Nina’s book is also excellent, but is a lot longer and less to the point.
OTOH, I couldn’t stand “New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for Shedding Weight and Feeling Great” even though I do the higher protein thing. It was WAY too marketing speak. (Yes, I get the irony given my meal descriptions, but that’s DELIBERATE
It kinda depends on your reason for being interested in a ketogenic diet.
If the issue is metabolic health, I like Dr Fung’s Complete Guide to Fasting.
If the issue is disease, I like Dr Wahls’ The Wahls Protocol.
If the goal is optimal health, I like Dr. Mercola’s Fat for Fuel.
If you seeking a general education of ketosis and is varied applications, I like the Ketogenic Bible.
I’ve recommended the obesity code to many people. I always tell them to bull through the researchy parts. Almost everyone that has read it front to back has had a mind blown epiphany regarding our current predicament.
"Call it carb withdrawal " - I find this makes more sense to me than “keto flu”. In Undoctored, Davis describes the first week of withdrawal , and it very closely describes my experience, particularly the cravings.
Dr. Fung books are awesome. And so easy to read. If you’ve listened to any of his podcasts or watched his YouTube videos, you will read the books in his voice. I have a degree in Biology with a chemistry minor, but His metaphors comparing complex biochemistry of the body to simple interactions that any layperson can understand are so helpful. I understand the biochem, but he gives me the language to explain my WOE to my friends and family.
