Best food when nauseous?

(Colin) #1

My wife is feeling a little nauseous at the moment. In the past, we’ve been advised (when in hospital, for example) to eat dry toast or crackers to help line the stomach. Can anyone suggest a good keto-friendly alternative?

Maybe poach & shred some chicken breast in a nice, salty broth.

I’ve been like this the past couple of weeks - crispy bacon strips are a nice alternative to crackers. You can get them in the Co op and most supermarkets

That’s a good idea. I do think something a bit salty is the key. I’ve had luck with olives & cold boiled eggs but I know many people find eggs hard to take when nauseous.

I have had success with glucomannan capsules and a glass of water as glucomannan coats the stomach. Hope this helps

Absolutely - something salty every time! Fried halloumi has got me through some tough times recently too!

The dry toast/cracker idea is so that if you can’t keep it down, it won’t taste too bad when it comes back up. It’s also based on the idea that a carb-burner who doesn’t eat every 90-120 minutes or so will keel over and die of hunger.

So the first question to ask is whether the nausea is accompanied by hunger or not. If the hunger is bad, some fat should be fine: a cup of heavy cream (diluted half-and-half with Seltzer water is a tasty treat), a bit of cheesse, something like that. A bit of fatty meat to nibble on won’t hurt, either.

If your wife is nauseated but not hungry, she shouldn’t eat anything. She can go along quite nicely on ketones until she does get hungry.

It should also be pointed out that the sensation of satiety (really not wanting any more food) can feel a bit like nausea.

 For me even water tastes terrible when it comes back up. I agree that sugar-burners have a very acute sense of glucose deprivation. And an equally low threshold of resistance.
