Berberine

That’s a good point, @siobhan. I don’t take supplements unless I’m doing some sort of test or very long extended fast (more than 2 weeks). I try to listen to my body. If I crave fish, or egg yolk, or hard cheese…I’m thinking my body is telling me what nutrient I should be getting. I think it’s important to learn to listen to your body, and perhaps this is a talent our ancestors had but we have not developed. So, I don’t want to take a multivitamin, as it will deafen that signal I want to hear from my body. I dunno…I could be wrong or right about this. Who knows. I find it peculiar though that I can get cravings for certain foods…it’s gotta be a crave for particular nutrients me thinks.

How does this relate to pregnant women having strong cravings I wonder.

Probably correlates pretty strongly. Though the aversions, I don’t know. My mom had an aversion to coffee when pregnant (and still does) and now there are studies saying too much caffeine can cause miscarriages. There are also aversions to stuff like fish being the most common, and undercooked fish is probably much more risky than, say, undercooked beef.
I would love to see a test done on pregnant women where they ask what they are craving at the moment, and draw blood to see if they’re low on anything!

I know it seems like cheating and “looking for the easy way out” but I have experience with supplements helping. My hands would go numb and B12 solved it. Had cramps and yellow mustard solved it (still a supplement by some definitions). So I guess the point/question is: I’m at my 90lbs down stall for about a year, and am tired of making no progress. A little help to get things rolling again doesn’t really feel like “cheating” does it? If Berberine could knock the basal insulin down a little, wouldn’t it be worth a shot? not withstanding side effects of course…

I did not use it myself, but my sister does, and she says it helps her with her insulin levels. Its not a wonder drug, but in combination with a proper diet, it could help people suffering from diabetes. A quick google search also shows that at least some people feel that Berberine is helping them. Here you can find some further information regarding this topic.

I read in a thread somewhere to only use berberine for 2 months at a time. I’m sorry I don’t have a source for you!

On supplements, they can be medicine too. Berberine and metformin are both derived from plants. Vitamin A oral is accutane. Vitamin A topical is types of retinol. Diclegis (prescription nausea medication) is B6 and an antihistamine. Lavender pills do as well as some prescription anxiety medications in studies. Thinking supplements aren’t medication is misguided.

There is no lower insulingenic and glycemic diet than eating nothing
