Been lurking for a week-ish but my first post; hey y'all!

(JamieC.) #1

I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I’m an married Oregon mom of 3 and Hubby and I started our Keto journey on 7-2-18. Couple of noobs over here! *waves hello like a crazy lady overly excited

We spend time each night looking around, reading, learning, and planning for the coming days. I always come here and find myself done this rabbit hole or that. Lots to learn!

My first, not necessarily most important, question is Who Has Keto’ed (term used??) in Disneyland!?!

I need help. Is it even possible? If you’re wondering, we teeechnically don’t leave for 94 days but still. :joy::joy: Thanks so much!!

I think you probably meant “lurking” instead of “trolling”, especially if this is your first post.

I’ve never been to Disneyland and I’m definitely a neophyte when it comes to doing keto while eating out, but…

I like ordering steak, ribs, or brisket. I’ve also ordered sausage and sauerkraut when available. Remember to ask for any sauce to be placed on the side. (I’ve forgotten to do this a few times.) If the establishment has avocado anywhere on the menu, you might ask them to include a few slices of avocado in place of the starchy veggies (e.g. French fries) that often accompany the meal. Green beans, broccoli, and cauliflower are okay too. Ask for butter to be brought with your food even though you won’t be eating any bread. I put the butter over the veggies and/or over the meat, especially if the meat ends up being too dry from lack of sauce.

You can often get salad even at fast food places. Skip the croutons (or pick them off) and use an oil and vinegar dressing. (I have GI problems when I eat too much salad, so I don’t follow this strategy myself, but I wish that I could.)

If the place you’re visiting ends up being impossible to eat keto, then either fast for the day or bring some macadamia nuts and pecans with you.

Ha! Yes! I think you’re right, @KevinB, Lurking is what, reading quietly to myself? Trolling is more like arguing and/or being super rude for no other reason than to get a rise out of someone(s)? Oops. No troll here!

(JamieC.) #4

@KevinB also, thank you. I’m screen-shotting your ideas for our trip. Steaks and butter sounds good to me. We will be walking 12 hours a day so I don’t think fasting would work for me that week. Although I’m so new, who knows. Maybe a 36 hour fast will be my go-to come October

What I did on my recent vacation (to Utah, where we were hiking for most of the day) was to eat breakfast in the morning. Most of the places we went had some kind of eggs as well as either bacon or sausages. I’d grab some butter and put it over my eggs along with salt and pepper. (You need to up your salt intake on keto!)

We’d then go do our daily activity, which as I mentioned earlier, was almost always hiking. We would often be out for most of the day. I’ve gotten accustomed to hiking (or mountain biking) for long periods without food.

When we got back, we’d go to dinner where I’d choose things to eat as described in my earlier post.

For snacks (or for the occasional breakfast or dinner when I couldn’t find anything suitable), we also brought with us some macadamia nuts, pecans, tins of oysters packed in olive oil, and some Rx Bars. (My favorite Rx Bar is Chocolate Sea Salt. It has a few too many carbs to be truly keto, but I tested my blood each day that we were on vacation and managed to stay in ketosis even when I ate up two or three a day. I’m guessing that I burned enough of the carbs during our activity during the day.) My wife had also brought with us (in a cooler) some of my favorite savory fat bombs. There were some days when I was able to eat the stuff that she brought along for me in place of going to dinner.

With regard to the fat bombs, if you don’t have it yet, you should get this book:

https://www.amazon.com/Sweet-Savory-Fat-Bombs-Delicious/dp/1592337287/

I don’t really care for the sweet fat bombs, but I really enjoy the savory ones.

Hi Jamie! I’m a Disneyland lover but haven’t been since being keto. There are turkey legs in one area of the park and the Bengal BBQ that sells awesome kabob type skewers. You can also order burgers lettuce wrapped and there are salads at a few of the restaurants. I was low carb vegetarian for 11 years and found food to eat, so it’s for sure possible on keto!

Fixed it for ya!:wink::grin:

@mtncntrykid much obliged! :smile::smile::smile:

That’s a good solid 3 months you can have under your belt by then. Plenty of time to become fat adapted. At which point you can decide if fasting while you’re there is best or if not, you will know how to customize items to make it Keto friendly.

While there may be a few exceptions, I would stay away from food vendors and opt for restaurant meals that you can have more ability to customize. At Disney, that will mean preparing ahead and making reservations for lunch/dinner as soon as the park opens. Otherwise you won’t get a table and you’ll be stuck with whatever the vendors have.

Or agian, you could just fast or do one meal a day (dinner) at a restaurant.

I haven’t been to Disney in years, but we just finished a St. Louis vacation. I walked over 20k steps each day. I was perfectly content fasting in the morning having only bulletproof coffee (I brought my own heavy whipping cream and coconut oil). We are out for lunch. I usually tried for a salad for lunch. One day I had a club salad (requested no croutons) with blue cheese dressing. Another day I had a Shawarma (?) salad at a Mediterranean Gyro place. I asked to leave off the chickpeas and add meat. Fajitas are always good. I give my 5 year old son the beans and rice, and I eat the meat, veggies, salad, pico. Hamburgers are good - I either eat on lettuce or I eat with a fork. No fries, add broccoli and some butter.

I was glad I brought coconut oil and HWC because our hotel had “whipped spread” and half&half.

Someone here mentioned that he could fee himself burning through body fat when fasting. I hadn’t experienced it before this trip. I totally get it now. Stick with it and you may be fat adapted by your trip, and if you choose to IF, it will be effortless by then.

One more thing - if you are flying don’t pay attn to the scale when you get home. I always retain water when I travel. Flying makes me swell, and I usually drink quite a bit less than when I’m at home. Maybe because it’s a PITA to stop for a bathroom break every 30 minutes!

I agree. Meat and green veggies and/or salad for me when I am out . I would rather not eat , and at times haven’t done so , if the establishment cannot help me out ( I get looks and comments of concern from the friends I am with but they are used to me now) .
Look at the menus, if what you feel you can eat are split across two, or three, different items ask if they can mix and match the menu for you. Any restaurant worth their salt will do this for you.
Ask for burgers without buns and extra salad and of course butter and/or extra virgin olive oil ( but be careful with this as quite often the olive oils can be cut with other brands - or carry around a small bottle or jar of olive oil in your bag)

Bring in your own snacks, way easier
Nuts in baggies, jerky, pork rinds😍
Bacon bits, put in sandwich baggies
Homemade keto trail mix of ur liking
String cheese, if not too hot I guess

Inside the park, another fun game or scavenger hunt :joy:
FREE 10g butter packs at the various dining places inside :rofl:ymmv

Good luck
Have fun!!

(JamieC.) #13

Haha you had me at free butter :joy::joy:

(JamieC.) #14

No, seriously, I’m already planning on getting Americano with HWC from Starbucks – those butter packets will be scavenged for a good cause!!

(JamieC.) #15

Yes! Thank you reminding me of the kabobs. Great options (assuming they are all sauced up).

We loved the turkey legs too. Their huge! lol

W Starbucks
There one on the walk in, downtown Disney
Just as you get to the main entrance for Disneyland, right side ( depending on where your parked )

If you are visiting CA Adventure…there’s a Starbucks just inside the main entrance as well…right side
Just a couple stores in

No. I have not been there b4🤣
Lol

Enjoy

Following this as I am heading there in 3 weeks! I picked up some pouches of olives and cheese snack bars from amazon to bring in. I am also going to make sure I pack my electrolytes as I will be guzzling water by the bucketful in Southern California.

I had no problem in Disney. Roast chicken. Baked ham. Hamburgers, chicken salad. Take your own nuts. Protein bars if you can good ones.make pepperoni cheese rounds or fat bombsif you have an insulated bag. I came home 4 pounds heavier, probably from walking so much. Lost in within. Few days.
