Nothing intimidates me.
And I’m coming after you.
Be afraid ADA
What can we do to fight the ADA and our nutritional guidelines? Power in numbers!
Need to get the attention of God-Emperor Trump. Milo Yiannopolous is keto . . . and there is only one degree of separation between them. I don’t have stats, but after watching Carb-Loaded I think they said that the diabetes epidemic is worse in low-income households. The US Government feeds more souls that any other entity in the US! (Schools, low-income programs, jails, military)
I’m going to ride off of @ketoberry message…
…but, before I do, I want to make clear my message is neither trump or obama based…it’s neither, but only focused on USDA food pyramid rules and so on that has gone on for decades…so, here it goes…
Trump is in the process of staffing his key people. One role not filled yet is the secretary of agriculture. I think it will be quite interesting who gets picked and what happens going forward. As in which farm produce gets to be subsidized (corn, wheat, beef?). What other changes will happen in usda policies, or will status quo be kept? Any influence on recommended daily allowances My Plate or Food Pyramid?
Again…please…no intention to make this a Political debate…just pointing out that secretary of Ag will likely have great influence going forward, that’s all.
I am certain I will find some effective instruction at Low Carb Breckenridge when I listen to and meet key speakers there. This forum is an important part of making a stand as well.
I am thinking change may not come from Government, dieticians or industry either food or pharmacy, but from health insurance as these companies are the ones who have a financial interest in their customer being healthy. As there would be less claims! Richard has talked before about a Swiss Insurance backer who has a report to say eating fat is a good thing. Hopefully other companies will follow suit. As long as they sack the Dieticians they employ!
I think this is absolutely the key to making a real change!!!
-
Pharma definately doesn’t want a change, Keto cuts out most of their drugs.
-
Hospitals don’t want it they need people sick and diseased funnelling in and out of their doors.
-
Mast doctors don’t want it, they are in the pockets of the hospitals and big pharma.
-
Universities don’t want it they make their money doing studies for Big Pharma
The insurance companies are the only big players that will improve their bottom lines by making people healthy
You know you work for a dental office when ADA means “American Dental Association” and you go into this thread wondering how this WOE helps your teeth
NOTE: I have ZERO financial incentive as I am personally not T2D but I’m wondering how a class action lawsuit against the ADA would workout. A court case where all evidence against their position and recommendations would be laid out. I’m sure I’m drastically oversimplifying things but occasionally I like to think out loud.
"I am thinking change may not come from Government, dieticians or industry either food or pharmacy, but from health insurance as these companies are the ones who have a financial interest in their customer being healthy. "
You would think so but I’m amazed at how remarkably impervious insurers are to anything but the conventional advice. My HMO is Kaiser. Kaiser would stand to make ENORMOUS savings if they got on board with this but they still spout the same old same old and claim it’s “evidence based”. If an obese or diabetic patient sees a dietitian they are told the same 2-3 servings of carbs (15 g) per meal and two snacks a day, very low fat crap advice. They are moving toward “plant based” dietary advice with lots of fruit to go with veggies and carbs and very little fat (“heart healthy” canola is still recommended). They limit meter strips and refuse to perform tests that would help insulin resistant patients track their insulin resistance–no insulin levels, no CRP or Homocystine, incomplete thyroid panels, standard lipids only , no C-peptide, etc. but they are quick to tell you to “eat less and exercise more” at every opportunity. if just one big hmo got on board it would RULE the medical world. But don’t hold your breath.
I also have Kaiser, and my previous dr was pushing the plant based diet nonsense. I also could only get basic tests. My new dr is 100% on board with keto though, which is good. But that was only after I proved it’s working for me. She also won’t order tests more frequently than once every 5 years, so I’m on my own if I want to get tested more frequently.
ADA would likely defend on the basis that their recommendations were consistent with the “best information available” and with government nutritional guidelines, yadda, yadda, yadda. As much as I’d love to see some of these orgs change their tune, I very much doubt (though IANAL) that civil liability is a viable means. And good luck suing the FDA or USDA on this front.
I doubt that you’d prevail on actually collecting damages and I agree that their defense would likely be what you described as “best available information at the time”. I’d be interested in if it would be a mechanism to force them and the government guideline folks to publicly admit that the new information is more accurate and force the changes. You only get to claim you didn’t know any better once.
That assumes that the case doesn’t get thrown out on some obscure procedural or standing grounds.
But…if you could avoid those outcomes, the discovery process could get interesting, if one began to find connections between ADA and the sugar lobby…
I still don’t think a lawsuit stands much of a chance, but those with something to hide are likely to be quite fearful of the discovery process.
I thought “Dentists”, too, when I saw this. But then I’m having all my mercury amalgams replaced and an extraction/implant done on Friday so it’s on my mind…
If we all chickened out and never made a move, nothing will ever change.
Getting it into the public eye is win #1
That was the last thing on my mind.
Getting it into the public eye is.
