BBC Does Sugar Cubes

#1

A friend of mine (who is not keto) posted this video today. She was in shock. And people who posted under her post were as well. Some thought it was just utter nonsense: “That isn’t right for oatmeal. It is healthy!”

I didn’t see the Oatmeal in the Clip, I guess it is on the main BBC site. Anyway, As with most foods, in the correct portion they are fine on a balanced diet. But Oatmeal is often seen as a healthy option and too much in consumed. It is true there is 0g of sugar in Oatmeal and LOADS of carbs which your body will convert to sugar.

The nutrition facts for 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of raw oats are (Trusted Source):

Calories: 389
Water: 8%
Protein: 16.9 grams
Carbs: 66.3 grams
Sugar: 0 grams
Fiber: 10.6 grams
Fat: 6.9 grams

Yes I saw this programme when it first came out. It was very good but didn’t quite go the full distance! Good start though😊

Thanks Kage, I loved this video and I am saving it to share with some family and friends who insist eating carbs is healthy. Awesome simple down to the brass tacks video for people who have no understanding of carbs and how they are processed in the body. Although most people don’t use sugar cubes in America it’s a very neat way to demonstrate visually. Thanks again. :cowboy_hat_face:

I can’t see the vid. Is there a link?

@April_Harkness Did you try the little arrow? It played okay on my iPhone but I couldn’t save it like I wanted to, only bookmark it.

@Kage I would like a web link too It’s from some BBC app I think so it didn’t post in a copiable form. I guess I will try searching it with Google. :cowboy_hat_face:

no arrow. it’ s just blank. perhaps it is the browser I am in. Would love to see evil sugar cubes.

Thanks. Sorry about the trouble.

You’re right. I wonder what my friend’s friend was responding about? Probably a personal note if she eats that a lot and the video was showing how “good” grains may not be as good as she thinks? I’ll have to ask. People get very defensive about their food. :stuck_out_tongue:

@David_Stilley

Thanks for putting the YouTube link, I was having trouble too.

I have bookmarked this as well, to show people!

Good video, and using “sugar cube equivalent” is a very useful visual aid compared to just giving numbers of grams of carbs per serving.

I knew that the strawberries were going to be a trick question for the participants, just because of knowing the are one of the safer choices for a low-carb diet.

Was pretty impressed at how much was in white rice, though.

FIFY John, at least that was my reaction. Although I knew rice turns to sugar in our bodies it was the sheer quality that blew me away! I have easily eaten 3X that amount of rice uncountable times! I used to cook Chinese food for a living and the philosophy was Chinese people didn’t become overweight because the bulk of their meal was rice with little meat and plenty of vegetables. Turns out the noodles, white rice and sugar amounts in American Chinese foods were the real culprits with my weight gain during those years. :cowboy_hat_face:

I watched this programme when it first aired on 6/06/2018, its still in my recordings. I was only a few months into keto then and I was very pleased to see it. Further into the programme they meet Dr David Unwin and his wife and talk about their success reversing T2DM. But I seem to remember they spoilt it a little by eating a few pulses and wholegrains!

This is similar to what Dave Unwin did with cards with teaspoons of sugar in common foods on these index cards, it’s free on the web somewhere.
