Bacon Diet

(George) #1

So my wife has been doing Keto with me for some time now and wants to try the bacon diet for a week. We tried the egg diet a couple weeks ago, the results were OK, but nothing that wow’d us.

As far as the bacon diet goes, has anyone ever added anything to it (sour cream, cream cheese, zero carb condiments, avocado/home-made guac, etc.) without having a negative affect on your results, or do most folks really just stick to bacon 100%?

Do what works for you. I love bacon, but I also love eggs, pork, beef, duck, liver, goose, etc. too much to go just bacon. I can tell you, however, that bacon and cream cheese is a delicious combination, so go for it, if you feel like it. As long as you keep your carb intake low, you’ll be fine.

A lot of this stuff is just a gimmick to get people to mix up their thinking about what’s okay to eat. Many people come to these forums with a real phobia about fat, the product of decades of brain-washing. The idea of eating nothing but bacon, which is both scrumptious and fat-laden, can entice such people into a different view of fat. (On the other hand, we do also see people who have the idea that a ketogenic diet is about cramming in as much fat as possible, to the point of vomiting, and that idea also needs to be knocked on the head.)

The only real keto rule is to keep carbohydrate intake low enough to experience the benefits of lowered insulin levels. The rest is just tweaks. Or fun, like eating bacon! :bacon::bacon::bacon:

Oh I totally know it’s gimmicky LOL, our carb intake is already pretty low at around 10-15 net carbs, so this bacon thing will practically be going almost into the ZC realm, right? I’m looking forward to trying it out.

BACON!!

I believe there are a few carbs in cream cheese, but it is an animal product, and therefore okay. :bacon::bacon::bacon:

I did it, it’s not needed but I decided to try it, more for fun than anything. Like I said I did drop weight, but I wouldn’t consider doing it more than a week. I ate 1lb of bacon, once a day, for a week. Lost about 6-7lbs total. It was fine, I’d do it again for time to time. But I think just going zero carb could do similar stuff.

(George) #6

Dumb question, but do you mean 1, 1 pound package of bacon per day, or did you weigh the bacon after it was cooked and ate a pound of that per day?

My personal approach is to avoid all of the gimmicks and eat a healthy mixed diet that includes plant foods and a variety of foods. Basically I eat foods from Westman page 4 mostly, with a few exceptions. He doesn’t mention nuts, for example, but I include small amounts.

He says you MUST eat 2 cups of leafy greens and 1 cup of other vegetables every day. I may not get that exact amount every day, in that ratio, but I absolutely eat my veggies.

But different things work for different people, so feel free to try things.

Bacon does have some carbs when you’re eating 1 - 1 1/2 lbs per day. If you’re really wanting a zero carb thing I would recommend something like a fatty grass fed beef fast. You could include a little liver throughout the period for a nutritional balance although liver has a few carbs too.

I agree with @PaulL about the attraction of being told “Eat nothing but bacon and loose weight”. The Bacon Experiment Facebook group is well known and attractive to people who are bacon lovers, but have been told for decades how bad it is for you and limited it to Sunday breakfast or something.

Bacon holds no magical ketogenic key, it’s just a good macro profile and makes sure people get into ketosis. People tend to eat less of it after the initial thrill is gone and carb cravings subside and loose water weight quickly and then some maybe go keto after.

I think it’s a useful tool maybe for a carb eater to get exposed to keto. I don’t know how much of a kick it would give to someone who’s already fat adapted and been at keto for months.

Most Facebook people are probably just going back to carbs afterwards and then cycling between TBE and SAD. KETO gone wrong. But I have thought about it and occasionally ate only bacon for a day, but I don’t think mono food diets are healthy when based on something with a limited nutritional profile like pork or eggs. I think beef covers the bases better if you want to do that.

I ate 1 pound a day, but I am female. It’s recommended to eat 1 to about 1 1/2 pounds for females. And for males 1 1/2 to about 2 pounds for males. It’s calorie reduction but it’s not intended for more than a week as you don’t want to lower your rmr. I would not include this as a constant tool either. It was fine to help me break a stall but I didn’t use it after that. Mostly I eat Whole Foods, but I took it as a challenge and fun rather than a constant tool.

Dan the original Bacon Experiment guy did it for 30 days. That’s the standard Bacon Experiment Diet. He says people benefit from shorter times too, 3+ days and encourages people to try shorter times if they’re not ready for 30 days. I think he lost 30-40 lbs and fixed his blood pressure issue. Yikes, 60 lbs of bacon in 30 days!

Hmm… only issue I have with that is it sounds like a lot, but 1lb of bacon really isn’t that many calories from what I could work out, maybe I was wrong? 30 days wow! Obviously 2lbs if male!

(Full Metal KETO AF) #12

Oh, I forgot this is generic Cronometer Bacon specs. I am never sure if this is raw bacon, cooked crispy bacon blotted dry, floppy juicy bacon, cooked bacon and fat drippings eaten, and the magical fat to meat ratio of a particular slab…?

Assuming that a slice of bacon is, what, 50 calories a slice? Maybe about 20 slices in a pound? 1000 calories. Things like the “egg fast” and the “bacon fast” are just CICO in disguise. Not saying there aren’t circumstances where someone might want to try these, but I don’t know why they’re encouraged when they’re just calorie-restrictions at the end of the day.

(George) #14

So my wife had a change of heart on the bacon thing, she wants to try a basic carnivore approach for a week instead.

So instead of only bacon, we’ll be doing steak, quite a bit of bacon, and an egg on our OMAD.

Crossing my fingers for continued weight loss

Hey, you’ll enjoy yourselves, no matter what! :+1:

(Ashley) #16

Not really encouraging it, I’ve just said I tried it. I also don’t recommend it long term as it seemed calories were low, but from what David showed maybe there’s more calories than I originally realized!

(George) #17

Definitely enjoyable, I just dont want to be surprised by any possible weight gain, which I’m not really expecting since we did a very similar week of this last week and still lost around 2 lbs., the only difference is we had asparagus with feta cheese on top along with the steak/bacon/egg

(Jay Patten) #18

This is a good point.

Maybe do a bacon and beef fast with more calories to keep her metabolism from dialing down. Also, you get great micronutrients from beef as well.

(George) #19

That’s what we pretty much decided to do instead of just bacon next week. Ribeye, 1/4 lb or so of bacon, and egg

(Jay Patten) #20

That sounds like perfection right there!
