August 2019 - IF/EF Chat Thread (All Welcome)

#54

Yes, that’s what I would have assumed, but the stories around it are compelling - super-fast wound healing, dramatically lower inflammation - and I wanted to do an experiment. Some folks are doing longer dry fasts (2, 3, 5 days…yeesh). That sounds nuts to me, but I’m curious to see what happens with shorter ones. So far it’s going fine but we’ll see how I’m doing in a week :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’ve been rooting for you since you first posted and am always happy to see your updates when I’m on the forum (which is much less these last few months, so I’m not caught up…).

Thanks!

Sorry about how I came across. I know it can be hard to accurately portray feelings and sometimes things can get miss-communicated.

I’m at a point where while I technically have body fat to spare (30%) I really feel like I don’t. All my fat is around my thighs and a bit on my arms. I’ve spent a lot of time trying to analyze what I’m eating and my macros and still don’t really know what’s the most effective.

I guess I just feel like I’m in one of the smaller sub-circles in the group, as someone with cancer. I know there are others who are in the same fight I am, but it seems to be a much smaller percentage. Also, I imagine with the pills and chemo, and how it effects cells in the body things work a bit differently.

I may just have to add more MCT oil more often to try to keep my BK higher during the day. I’ve mostly just been testing BG/BK right before whatever meal I’m eating.

(also, if an admin could… could we split this discussion and associated replies to another area. I’m not sure it really should be on the fasting thread… but maybe a new/separate GKI discussion?)

@PaulL can you help out KetoCancerMom with her request for another thread?

Thanks!

Starting a ~70 hour fast. No social or business obligations and I hope to keep it that way.

I will not be measuring ketones this time since I am out of strips.

It’s August! yay for the new thread and congrats to all who have already been fasting well.

I was at the lake for most of the first 4 days of the month, however I met both of my holiday goals which were pretty audacious if I say so myself.

I came home from the girl’s weekend weighing less than when I left and I had 2 new lows on the scale. I did omad and just did other stuff when people ate other meals.

Today before my meal I had bg=74, bk=3.6, and gki=1.14, in fact I had GKI <2 all weekend even with omad so I am super happy about that.

Started a 40h or so fast until Tuesday midday. I hope that the 2 spoonfuls of rebel ice cream do not trigger cravings tomorrow. I also work from home, still learning to fast well when at home and by the kitchen!

Today’s OMAD yielded great results.

Time BG BK GKI
T0 89 0.9 5.49
T60 88 2.1 2.32
T120 87 2.9 1.66
T4hr 80 3.9 1.14

I’m happy with these results.
My dinner was Cauliflower mac & Cheese w/ bacon and teryiaki chicken, with 1/2 cup of Heavy Cream w/ chocolate MCT powder

I’m curious to see if I can achieve similar results tomorrow night. I think I’ll try but cut out the teryaki chicken to see what happens.

I think I just need to take a few nights of making the same thing (or at least eating part of what was served) to see what effect it has.

ETA: I didn’t take my vitamins right away… Wondering if that had an effect…

ETA2: BG down to 80, BK up to 3.9, about 1hr after vitamins and 2hrs from previous test. Send vitamins had no impact

How to compromise between keeping ketone-levels high and not losing weight?

That is terrific =) I am glad that you had good results.

Is the rise of BK the result of the MCT powder? That is a pretty dramatic rise in BK. Thanks for posting.

Happy Meal-less Monday if you are fasting

I am at 15 hours and hoping that even though I am right next to the kitchen it’s a pretty easy day. Two things in my favor. My tummy is still upset from the two spoonfuls of ice cream last night and I have a dentist appointment later in the day.

I don’t want my mouth to be sore, but perhaps it will discourage me from eating if it is.

Either way I have my fasting crutches if needed and my coffee and I am ready to fast on!

Wishing all a wonderful week!

After some impromptu fasts last week (more like skipped meals because I was too busy) I went a little overboard with some re-feeding on Friday and Saturday, which showed up on the scales Sunday morning.

So I fasted yesterday and continuing on today. Probably at about 36 hours now, considering that I nibbled into the evening hours on Saturday.

I really needed it, too. Yesterday I got pretty hungry towards dinner time and powered through it with several types of tea and some decaf coffee. But by later evening, no problems. I find my eating triggers sometimes need a tug on the leash to get back under my conscious control.

This morning, however, I’m feeling fine with just a couple of cups of black coffee, no real hunger. So I’m just rolling with it.

I have a busy work week ahead, which would usually make it really easy to fast. But a co-worker is in town and may want to go out to eat while here, so I may end up breaking it later today.

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #64

That’s a good question. I’m not entirely sure. I use it pretty much every night, and usually don’t see these results.

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #65

Okay ~21 hrs fasted. Stomach has felt more empty than before. Maybe my mind is playing tricks on me. Evening is usually easier than during the day and I’m approaching the evening hours so I’m setting my site on sleep and morning. They will take it another day at a time.

I’m still thinking ~70 hrs is the goal.

Happy fasting all.

(Mame) #66

Yay Eric!!

Me too and I am only shooting for 42h or so. I just finished a glass of keto-ade because I was really feeling a strong urge to eat. Hopefully my upcoming visit to the dentist will be a good distraction LOL

(Cancer Fighting Ketovore :)) #67

I tried to have a similar meal today at lunch as yesterday’s dinner, except that I omitted the chicken

Time (hrs) BG BK GKI
T0 98 0.8 6.8
T1 94 1.4 3.7
T2 98 1.7 3.2
T4 76 3.1 1.4

*I’ll edit as I add data points
*Tomorrow I may try eliminating the MCT cream, as I call it to see what effect that has

*It’s looking like a similar response, but due to the higher starting BG my ketones are lower overall
** Wow, wasn’t expecting that much of a drop, but I’m pleased!

(Kristin) #68

@daddyoh, I’m on my way to a multi day fast too! 26hrs down shooting for 4 days but like you taking it one day at a time. This is my first fast during work so I am not sure what to expect but usually day 1 is most difficult and today was really easy!

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #69

@kristen Yea. I find fasting at work easier than home. But everyone is different.

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #70

34 hrs fasted and sleep was very good for a fasting night. 7 1/2 hrs of sleep.

Headed to the gym in a few mins. Volumetric upper body resistance training. My volumetric days are easier than training to failure because I don’t want to stimulate hunger.

Now for the first cup of coffee.

(John) #71

Ended up stopping last night after about 46 hours. I could have kept going. I wasn’t feeling hungry but had low energy and just felt like it was time to break it.

Hope everyone else is doing well with their efforts.

(Eric - The patient needs to be patient!) #72

Sometimes it just feels right to stop.

I’m at 39 hours and getting ready to take some salt. Doing good so far. Got a busy work day ahead and that helps.

(John) #73

I agree. I seem to have dialed in my “sweet spot” as 36 hours. That is long enough where I do have to focus on managing eating triggers and getting to where hunger is properly re-synced with body needs. Longer than that I tend to start feeling cranky and just tired. I have done a couple of 60-ish hour fasts and those felt too long.
