Attention Butter Munchers!

(Fiddlestix H. McWhiskers) #1

For those of you who eat just straight butter by the stick or out of the tub, was it an acquired taste? Was it something you found value in and just decided to make yourself get accustomed to? I would like to get to that point, but I’m just not there yet. I put lots of butter on my meatballs when I heat them up in a bowl and I eat the butter like soup at the end. I’ve eaten a few slices of butter and it’s not bad, but I don’t know if I could eat a stick like a candy bar, like I’ve seen others do.

Any thoughts or contributions?

I have been keto for many years and have never considered eating butter straight up as something I needed to do. I do consume butter but just in cooking and as a condiment here and there. I never use it as a primary food.

I am wondering what your thinking is on butter and why you want to eat it like a candy bar?

I can’t claim to be a whole stick-eater, but as a child I’d cut a little corner off a stick and eat it. Suck it like a lozenge.

Still in that realm; I’ll cut off maybe 1/20 of a stick, eat it, perhaps repeat that a few times… Will do shots of olive oil too. But the thought of munching down a whole stick of butter - that is vaguely/moderately nauseating. Not saying it makes sense. Warmed/melted butter, especially if salted - could guzzle multiple sticks’ worth.

I have times when I’ll run my thumbnail over the butter (my personal stick, of course), and suck my thumb, sometimes til a quarter of the stick is gone. Sometimes I have no urge whatsoever to do that. It’s like other satiety cues, I want to, till I absolutely don’t. I operate on the assumption that my body is telling me when I need it and how much.

I’ve seen a number of people do this; mainly zero carb carnivore folks. They say it’s good for making sure you get enough fat, it helps with satiety and is a good snack. I know that a lot of people do it, so I’m really looking forward to responses from those people.

Here’s a compelling video that explains my curiosity a bit:

Lunch

If you are a committed strict keto or carni eater, then a butter lunch is not a bad easy meal, especially when time is short or there is limited other options. I love the taste of butter, and I am quite happy munching on a stick or 2.

I used to find butter wrappers in my youngest kiddo’s bedroom when she was around six years old. She ate it straight up like a candy bar.

I don’t eat butter on it’s own, I’ve tried it! just to see if I had the urge … I often cook with it and I add it at the end of cooking because I like a sauce but that amount of butter seems like enough to me.
I kinda feel fat should be in a combination with protein but I haven’t based that on anything other than gut instinct.

The people who eat it like candy often have a reason.

My wife eats it for energy. She is carnivore. It also helps with constipation. She also has severe gut issues due to 35 years of strong prescription meds. So for her, meat and butter are about all she can tolerate. Even then it’s hard for her, since her gut is so damaged.

I think Steal and Butter Gal (Bella) who came very, very sick to carnivore after 6 years vegan, found the butter a necessity due to her issues.

So it all depends on what you are trying to fix. Different things for different people. But it certainly won’t hurt you to eat some butter!

I haven’t eaten an entire stick plain but I have eaten straight butter or coconut oil (a tablespoon-ish) to bring my fat macros up. I’ll tell you one thing, there’s a huge difference in the quality of standard American butter versus European, which is really noticeable eating butter plain; we now spend the money on the imported stuff, there’s that much of a difference (don’t get me started on coconut oil, the quality can range from sublime to rancid. You have to taste it plain, honestly).

In thinking back over the years, my food cravings have always leaned towards fat. When I’ve done several day fasts, for example, towards the end I start fantasizing about juicy cheeseburgers with mayo, not sweets. I did have a dreadful sweet tooth as a kid but have outgrown it and now I can keep a bar of dark chocolate forever, just eating a single square at a time. My friend, she can’t, she’ll binge it. On the other hand, I can wipe out a box of wine in a few days, no problem. We all have our challenges.

Butter has a ton going for it, including CLA and C15:0. I’m trying to get back to eating more butter.

Butter is awesome, I had a butter only snack (100g) out of necessity years before I could even imagine to try carnivore - but it was still enjoyable. I always loved fat too much (sadly, I need to eat way less than what I desire just to maintain my fat body… though I doubt I could gain even more but I hate overeating massively… but I digress) and butter is very tasty fat!

I don’t eat much butter for reasons (the fat minimization I have been doing since I went low-carb… I pretty much avoid added fat, as much as I can, at least but I am good enough at that now, after 1.5 decades) but it’s a joy every time. My fat fast days always have a cute portion  I don’t really need any added fat to reach 90% fat, pork is enough - but butter is lovely. I rather skip egg yolk than butter on fat fast days…

It’s an expensive item and anyway, I love lard too but one just can’t replace the other. So I keep both and if I had to choose, that would be butter. I have plenty pork fat in my meats, I don’t need so much rendered out lard… But it’s good to have both.

I don’t cook with butter or put it on meat or anything, only use it in baking sometimes (but not on carnivore, there I like to put it on my baked goods).
I used to use butter almost exclusively on bread in my past. The pure butter eating came later but I do it sparingly and the amount isn’t so big. But it’s very, very, very nice. I disliked it in coffee though, I need some more proper dairy there.

Eating a big slice alone again… It would be a LOVELY way to add fat if I ever needed it. But as I wrote, I don’t. Not even on fat fast days. But maybe I will do it one day. I just love pork jowl too and I only can afford it on fat fast days or else I will massively overeat, almost no matter what. It’s a bit hard to stop. Butter is great but I can stop easily. I know as I often eat a slice when I put another portion into the butter dish… Or maybe use it for something… It’s quite irresistible, that’s why it’s good to be able to stop early.

Well I eat way too much fat, fat doesn’t help with satiety unless it has a ton of protein too (but my protein sources usually have enough. they had way too much until I trained myself to eat lean pork) - except fat fast days… But yes, it’s a good snack. Sometimes. I mean, I want to chew on things too. Like the hobbits with the ent drink, nice, good, satiating… But a hobbit want to bite into their food too!

Wow. When I was a kid, I merely ate mustard that way! (Still love sour things.) I put the butter on half a loaf of bread… Your kid does it better! :+1:

I do wish America had more fermented butter, which is often what I buy when I want “fancy” butter. The fermentation helps with more CLA:

This is an overview of the saturated fat, C15:0:

Yet one more reason why low fat is not better than normal fat.

(Bob M) #15

Should note that those are all correlations. However, C15:0 can be tested in blood levels, so unlike food frequency questionnaires, you can get an accurate picture of the levels. I think every study I’ve seen that does this testing finds a positive result for higher levels of C15:0.

I know some people can’t eat/drink dairy, but for those who can, this saturated fat apparently isn’t evil.

And let’s note that the amount of C15:0 in dairy is less than the amount of palmitic acid (C18:0), which is roundly considered to be evil. Yet people with higher C15:0 (and therefore higher palmitic acid level intake) are healthier in general. Odd. (Can’t find the study I had of different fatty acids in milk. I’ll have to find it again.)

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #16

I’m not wild about eating butter plain, but it sure is yummy on steak, eggs, bacon, lamb, burgers, cheese . . .
