Ate brownie and ice cream, feel like death!

(Jill F.) #1

So I hit my goal weight about 2 months ago. I have slowly added some carbs back in here and there like small servings of fruit or Greek yogurt with no problems.

Last night hubby and I split a warm, gooey chocolate brownie covered in ice cream. Today, I feel like I have the flu. Nauseated, shaky, pain, whole bit. I am telling this as a cautionary tale to not be me, lol. Dont do it, not worth it! I have literally been in bed most if the day. So not worth it! I had keto flu really bad early on keto, not sure why this surprised me.

Anyone else torture themselves this way, or am I the only dummy?

I sometimes sit in solidarity with you, as the occasionally tortured.

It’s hard to motivate myself the next day, feeling like that after having a carb loaded dish; but after I force myself into the gym and attempt the workout of the day, It actually fades, and I feel way better. Now it has become my default cure; try to burn off that crap flowing through my veins.

I hope you feel better soon!

I’m happy for you Jill, not that you feel bad but that you learned a hard earned lesson. Sugar is poison, no other way to look at it. You were used to feeling not so great before KETO and you gave yourself a solid reminder of the why. I hope you feel better soon. I know you feel like crap but I agree with @DKElisaga, getting some activity in, hydrating and salt will help you recover quicker than staying in bed. :cowboy_hat_face:

Desserts can be problematic. Even now when I occasionally eat one it causes bloating. Generally, it’s the ones that contain grains as well as sugars. Eat too much and it’s like taking a laxative. Fruits and even ice cream doesn’t seem to be near as severe.

I never have with actual “carbs” like a brownie BUT my almond butter/pecan/pork rind BINGES made me feel like I was actually ill like you describe. Nauseated, sluggish, bloated af, headachey, anxious, miserable.

Like you say, SO not worth it.

When I was about 6-8 months into keto, I went with some friends for a chinese meal. I tried to be as LC as possible, but in a chinese restaurant everything has sugar in it! I didn’t want to be rude or unsociable. I learnt my lesson.
An hour later I was sweating and shaking I felt so bad. Like I was truly suffering a hypoglycaemic attack. With what I know, I believe that a massive insulin spike, coupled with a lack of insulin resistance, caused my cells to suck up the glucose and I got a reactive drop in BS.
Never again! And I can honestly say that sugar makes me ill if I am ever in that position again!
Dr Berry once said that everyone should have a relapse at least once so they know what it feels like!

Hey @BlueViolet Pecangate

@CrackerJax oh yes, imprinted forever on my memory. :open_mouth:

Funnily, I never ate myself sick on anything before keto.
Now I can claim pork rinds, almond butter and pecans, as binge-until-sick events. So proud of myself :grimacing:

Aww, I remember the day you started your thread! All in the distant past!

The smaller I get the worse the desire to binge. @MommyJill2005 is pretty tiny and trim herself and I wonder if that contributes to these urges (being smaller).

(Jill F.) #11

I wonder this myself. When I was 40 pounds heavier I ate junk like that all the time and never noticed feeling that bad. Now it feels like a severe food allergy, I just know it is not worth it and I will happily stick with keto!

('Jackie P') #12

I have yet to find out! Another 28 lbs and I will let you know!
Maybe it’s something to do with not drawing on your body fat?

(hottie turned hag) #13

This plus I think you hit it up above when you say less insulin resistance so a big BG drop postprandially. I know I never binged IN MY LIFE before, never had such uncontrollable cravings, and such extreme horrible reactions, until I got p close to goal weight.

I felt great and had ZERO CRAVING or binges until I got under 120lb.
Now at 112-ish I must stick to “almost carn” (cannot have cheese anymore nor veg; they trigger me to BINGE though they formerly at higher weights did NOT) to feel great.

Must have to do with the diminished fat stores. I am flabby as heck but have little fat, now.

I’m the same way, I can take in carbs when I want to without issue…UNLESS it’s the sweets/desert type stuff, then I feel like crap and the cravings come. It can be breads/pasta etc and it’s not an issue. I have learned though that more regular exposure to carbs curbs that over-reaction that happens.

I liken it to giving up smoking. Give up for a year or so and then have a cigarette (probably after a drink or two)and you feel dizzy, sick and just … Poisoned!

I am at a low body fat % now and wondering the same thing. Seems I do much better with more fat and now and again more carbs. Just meaning carbs like some nuts or greek yogurt, which I mostly avoided while losing.

Happy Forum anniversary Anne!!!

Thank you, Susan! Can’t believe it has been that long but time does fly when enjoying good community.

It is certainly an awesome forum, I agree!

I’m actually pretty tolerant of a single binge like this. I mean, it doesn’t help my weight loss any, but I don’t wake up the next day feeling like crap. Several days in a row will start to make me feel sluggish, tired, and depressed, though. I also think it makes a difference as to exactly what it is. I’m far more tolerant of a piece of pie than of the same amount of carbs that’s straight wheat (bread, crackers, flour tortillas…). I’m learning that my body hates wheat more than it hates sugar, by a long shot.

PS-- @annecbrodie, happy steak day!
