Artificial Sweeteners and Cravings

(Ryan Roman) #1

So I’ve been doing keto for a little over a year now, having reward days usually every month or so (I’m 18.)

Anyways, I wanted to hear if anyone else had a problem with artificial sugars like me. I can eat them and they taste great, but they really make me crave more and more. If I make fat bombs with just a little stevia, I have a really hard time not just eating all of them. Same thing with protein bars, and sometimes with coffee (If i put stevia).

Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?

Yes, this is a problem for me…I have only found one solution…Dont eat anything with sweetners!

I know, harsh. But, for me it is reality and only took a couple of days for me to find the cravings were less and now I don’t want them any more. Find something you can have and enjoy instead.

^^^Second this! Your tastes will change drastically on Keto which is something most people don’t expect. I know, I didn’t. My Dad used to tell me to always to sample those things that you didn’t like, because your taste buds are always changing. You never know what you may have found distasteful, you might actually like later! Keto has proved that out for me.

I used to make sweet Keto treats when I started and carried 72% dark chocolate everywhere just in case and then… I just stopped craving them after a few weeks. I have several mini chocolate bars with me on this trip and I had actually forgotten about them for the past 8 days until this evening (they may have melted…).
The sweetest things I’ve had this past week (apart from a bite of TG pecan pie) were a splash of Mio in my water now and again and slightly sweetened home whipped cream with a few raspberries.

If you can’t shake the cravings, try various sweeteners and see if any work for you. Erythritol, Xylitol, Stevia, Sucralose, Monkfruit, etc. all come in different forms some of which may work better?

Okay thank you all for your answers. I will look to start cutting them out completely; I used to be able to do that when I was a lot stricter, gonna look to get back to those old ways. Thanks again

The other thing to consider is that you are 18 and maybe full strict Keto isn’t the best thing for you? I don’t know your goals but even if you are really obese, the odds are your metabolic damage is fully reversible and nothing like as far gone as many here.
If you are doing it for general health or to emulate some low carb athlete etc. and your metabolism isn’t damaged then maybe low carb is fine and you can make room for some real sweet treats in a larger carb allowance so you are not feeling deprived which is a key reason for falling off the wagon.

Yeah that is true. I weigh around 150, and im about 5’ 10", so pretty average. I feel really great when I eat low carb, so that’s most of motivation. When I eat sugar, I have the need to get more and more and really feel sluggish and have a hard time getting things done.
I grew up eating really poorly; at lot of fried food and a ton of sugar, I turned it around about 3 years ago and have just felt so much better since. I think I was around 175 (and increasing) sophomore year, and now I’m steadily at 150, enjoying keto meals. I just wanted to try some artificial sweetener stuff for re-making some old treats every now and then.
Thanks for the reply.

Be happy that under Keto, some things that used to be ‘unhealthy’ are now healthy again… deep fried things… mmmm… (pork rind breading of course). :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Good Luck and KCKO!
