Interesting discussion paper on fasting or the ‘mimicking fasting’ diet and its potential for ‘turning back the clock’
Article on Longo's fast-mimicking diet
I think Protein Sparing Modified Fasts are a great thing, and can provide many benefits for people. I also think water fasts, intermittent fasts, alternate day fasts, Fat Fasts, egg fasts, etc. all provide benefits.
I have observed that many people that favor Protein Sparing Modified Fasts (PSMF) discount Fat Fasts, or any other form of fast where nutrients are taken in, which I find ironic.
Many places I go lose their mind if you even imply that consuming any calories whatsoever is a fast. I posted the definition and got blasted! Don’t let the truth get in the way of your beliefs.
Just heard the recent 2KD episode with Dr Gerber. In this episode he mentions the PSMF and says it works. I have always heard even in Keto circles that protein without fat in the diet is really dangerous.
I have a BMI of 32 and was interested in trying this out, in some respects this may be similar to the steak challenge diet that @Brenda and @Donna. I wonder what to make of it and is it a safe trial?
The rest of the equation was… he said it works for people who do not have a high insulin response. There are roughly 20% of obese people who are metabolically healthy and this would be a direction to try it you know you don’t have a problem. Also, just being thinner does not mean your adioose tissue is healthy and you may still have high insulin.
[There are several versions of PSMF out there. I’d start with the one that recommends a protein level that will allow you to remain in ketosis.]
Here is Mark Sisson’s take on the Fasting Mimicking Diet. Does the Fasting Mimicking Diet Live Up to the Hype?
I’m not willing to try that fast-mimic myself. Too high in carbs!
