Are nuts ok?

Are nuts ok?
Macadamia?

(Alex) #2

totally fine. some people find nuts slow their rate of weight loss, but they’re low carb and fit well in a ketogenic diet regarding macronutrients

(Cristian Lopez) #3

Absolutely!! For the past 3 years I’ve derived >50% of my fats from nuts (poly unsaturated to monosaturated fats considerd)

The best ones I consume atleast once a week

-Pecans
-Bigs Pumpkin seeds (almost daily (: )
-Sunflower seeds (with shell)
-almonds (mostly almond flour)
-3 Brazil nuts
-macadamia nuts
-Black walnuts
-Pili nuts (If you can afford them)

The ones you should stay away from are

-pistachios
-peanuts
-cashews

Too high in carbs, not even a nut, or too high in polyunsaturated fat ^^^

My biggest problem with macadamia nuts is they cost $28/pound here and my non-keto wife eats them on me. Seriously… i bought a pound of them this week to help keep my fats up and they are gone. I had a few handfuls.

Lol

(Summer) #5

When you say over 50 percent? So how many nuts would that be?

…and 3 Brazil nuts?

#6

I’ve recently discovered Cashew milk at the store, next to the Almond milk, etc. I had bought it for making keto ice cream, then had a glass of it chilled and on ice and it tastes sweet to my keto palate! It’s only 2 carbs per serving. Highly recommend it as a complement to tomato-sauce foods, reminds me of milk. And now that the weather is very warm where I am - I’m now occasionally having it as a post-dinner beverage with my little keto dessert macaroon. Yum!

depends on the nuts or seeds… these are the only ones I eat… higher on the list is better (for me)

units in grams

(Cristian Lopez) #8

This exactly the same case for me!

(Cristian Lopez) #9

So never exceed more than 3 Brazil nuts due to selenium poisoning

So a day of eating nuts would be

a whole bag of bigs roasted “in shell” pumpkin seeds

1/2 ounce of macadamia nuts

1 ounce pecans

1 tbsp of coconut flour as Parmesan substitute

1 tbsp of almond butter for dessert

(All eaten in my 6 hour eating window”

I guess I’m confused. Grams? Like how many buts is that?

I guess I should get a scale?

Nuts are ok if you portion them and don’t get compulsive cravings for them. If you do find yourself unable to stop dipping in it’s recommended to only eat raw unsalted nuts. It’s harder to overeat them and probably healthier than salted roasted nuts which can be done in vegetable oil.

And if you’re new to keto many people recommend avoiding the for the first couple of months. I myself followed that advice as well as avoiding the urge to make and eat keto treats and fat bombs. It gave me time to focus on meals of good vegetables, meat and fats and my changing of eating habits leaving carb foods behind. I guess I associate nuts with snacking, which I don’t do anymore. I am TMAD almost every day. Occasionally I use nuts in cooking but I have kind of moved away from them again. They’re not off the menu though. :cowboy_hat_face:

About 0.000008. And it’s spelt butts. :joy:

(Summer) #13

So 1/2 ounce of macadamia nuts… is how many?

(Carl Keller) #14

A one-ounce serving of nuts greatly differs. The following equal one ounce: 24 almonds, 18 medium cashews, 12 hazelnuts or filberts, 8 medium Brazil nuts, 12 macadamia nuts, 15 pecan halves and 14 English walnut halves .

(Karim Wassef) #15

the package will usually have a serving size and weight so you can determine it that way

(Omar) #16

Nuts are the worst

One gram of Nuts = one gram of WEIGHT gain in the belly.

Tried several times and very repeatable.

Nuts are too easy for me to go overboard.

About portions, invest in a $10-15 digital kitchen scale, Amazon has plenty of options in this price range. You need to weigh foods until you’re good a visually judging portions at least. I weigh goods to track carbs in an app. I just started this a few months ago after 5 months of guesstimating my carb levels and I was underestimating them. If you want results measure, weigh and track your food for a while at least. It’s a reality check at the least and will help sharpen your keto efforts. :cowboy_hat_face:

Thanks! What app do you use
