Are my Ketone levels too high?

(Eli) #1

I’m 6 weeks into doing Keto and have been on OMAD for the last week. I test my blood ketone levels everyday cos I like numbers with around 0.7 to 2.0 reading before OMAD and 1.5 to 3.0 on OMAD, so I kept doing it. Today I got a reading of 4.3, which I was a little shocked by because I had been getting around 2.5 continuously on OMAD.

Should I be concerned by this reading, I know I’m nowhere near the danger zone but should I cut back and maybe have a midday snack from now on?

Thanks

Nope, nothing to see here. Just means you’re making ketones but not very good at using them (yet).

Ah ok, thanks. So that means just KCKO and I’ll slowly get better at using my Ketones.

Spot on. You’re doing fine.

Unless something is metabolically wrong with you, you’re not going to get to a dangerous level regardless of what you do. Until you’re truly fat adapted which is probably coming in the next couple weeks don’t waste too much money on burning those ketone strips. Higher doesn’t mean more fat loss. It can mean more mental clarity and energy but you don’t need ketone strips to know that’s going on.

Got it, thanks. I’m already losing quite a bit of weight, would I still not be fat adapted? And if not, whats the difference between where I am now and fat adaption?

Fat adaption is not on/off, it is on a sliding scale. You are probably reasonably fat adapted now if you are losing weight, but it can take up to 6 months to become fully fat adapted. You are essentially building the internal machinery to metabolise fat. This takes time.

My measure of good fat adaption is if you can do a 36 hr fast without any strong hunger. It means your body is quite happy chewing through bodyfat.

That explains it better. I still do get occasional hunger pains on OMAD that go away after a bit, I guess that’s a sign I’m not QUITE there yet but still losing weight, which is good.
