Anyone else needing to eliminate foods out of their diet?

I guess I’m pretty lucky. My palate and stomach have the sensitivity of a garbage disposal.

Can’t go wrong with salt and pepper. Rosemary goes well with poultry and I’ve been meaning to try it on steak.

There are great. Nuke em for 6-7 minutes, drain the water, then pan fry them in bacon grease and seasoning.

Can you wash them?

#23

It doesn’t help. Only cooking gets stops the reaction.

Zucchini is a squash actually. Also Spaghetti squash must be baked before being able to be eaten. Zucchini noodles could be eaten raw if you really wanted too.

Mustard :yum:

That is an oral allergy. Avocados are loosely connected to bananas and Latex. I can tolerate a half an avocado, but a whole one makes my stomach hurt and my mouth itch. I also respond to some latex bandages. I put a link , yesterday, on the forum on oral allergies. This one explains it fairly well.

Asparagus, can’t do it so avoid it. Oats, definitely not - not a massive issue on keto but it does mean I can’t risk trying keto baked goods that use oat fibre as an ingredient. Avocado - in a smoothie or baked goods I can do it, but on its own it makes me ill so I generally avoid it too.

Asparagus and oats are both high in inulin and once I tried adding powdered inulin to smoothies for fibre and it had the same effect so I suspect this is the actual issue.

I used to say I had a cast iron stomach. then it started to rust. . . .

I have eliminated or should eliminate the following:

wheat–wreaks havoc in my gut
most dairy–plugs up my sinuses
whipped cream–can’t stop eating
nuts–can’t stop eating
flax–gives me constipation and weird guts

I hardly eat any plant foods now. It’s easier to just cook some beef or eggs and not bother with the veg. Recent experience has suggested that plant foods disagree with me. Maybe I’m just not used to them any more, or maybe they always messed me up and I didn’t know.

Specimen:
ME

Experiment:
I re-introduced dairy over the last week
Thought, end of the year, I’ll try again
So, I mixed it in at different times w my OMAD or a TMAD

Result:
Freaking exhausted and fatigued
Yuck
Bloated , just like the old days

Solution:
Bye bye Dairy!!

Disclaimer:
Except for Miss Kerry Gold, she’s staying still
I’m not breaking up w her🤣

I used to be able to eat EVERYTHING. I loved that fact about myself so much that it took me having abdominal pain for 8 years before I really considered that it might be food. Well, that and keto. Going keto got me to where I didn’t have the same frequency and intensity of pain EVERY single day and I realized it had to be food related.

This is a partial list as I’m not finished with testing and eliminating but so far I’m pretty sure the following hurt me:

Dairy is out. :frowning: I initially eliminated it because I was addicted to whipping cream in my coffee but felt way better after it was out. I don’t really know if I can reintroduce hard cheeses yet, but I do know that sour cream and yogurts are bad for me too.

Nuts. I have the same problem as @Chipmunk. I lack the ability to be moderate with them and when I have more than a few it feels extremely heavy, like I’ve eaten a huge meal. It’s uncomfortable enough that it interferes with my sleep.

Dark chocolate. Strangely, I only became aware that I have a problem with chocolate after I started keto. It must be the amount of actual chocolate in dark chocolate. I’m fine if I cheat and have a Mars Bar but three squares of the good stuff decimates my gut.

I know there are going to be a lot of vegetables on the list. I feel better when my meals have very few or none. This pains me as I love my veg. I had a meal for several days last week that had mushrooms, onions, and peppers in it and I had pain and terrible inflammation every day I ate it. I really find picking away at my diet this way unpleasant but it’s better than pain and discomfort for the rest of my life.

Lastly, I’m nearly positive coffee is a trigger. It’s so hard for me to get rid of it, but I know I must.

I feel your pain on this one. I must also eliminate coffee. But it is so hard.

I went to a website about weaning off of coffee. It said to let your boss know, just incase you have headaches or something.

She was afraid my performance would drop and bought me coffee and cream for the office and told me im not allowed. Lmao. Thought it was funny.

Now she asks me to make coffee when i get there and asks for a cup.

Coffee and boss 3 : me 0

I wonder why dairy is so hard to quit. Its like by day 3 i crave cheese or cream on everything…

Ive been reading on the addicted properties of cheese. Not sure yet if this is truth

For me it’s eggs. I think I can have a few in small quantities. I have been experimenting by not eating them for weeks then trying them and the same terrible headache and disaster pants happened all four times so I think I’m going to have to admit egg defeat. Boo hoo!

I’m going to have to reduce my bourbon intake. My husband has been off for three weeks (he takes 3 weeks every Christmas) and we have put a huge dent in our bourbon supply. 3 drinks (I drink bourbon and water; he drinks bourbon and Coke Zero ) per night most nights. That equates to about 15 to 18 drinks a week while during the rest of the year I have maybe 5 drinks per week max. We don’t get drunk or stupid. We are very much in control of our intake and can take it or leave it. We just enjoy it. So I don’t think we have a problem. However my joints have been sore the past few days even though my weight has remained stable. I’m pretty sure it has to do with alcohol. He will go back to work Wednesday and the children will start school the following week so we will be back to our normal “3 per night on the weekend” but I’m considering giving it up completely because of the joint pain.

Other than the carbs you have to cut out, I have not needed to eliminate anything. In fact, I have been trying to introduce new foods that I have normally not eaten, or eat foods more regularly that I didn’t really like much before.

I am still teaching myself to like pickles and olives. I decided oysters were a “no thanks.” Anchovies straight out of the can are too powerful of a flavor, but I can see how they would be OK as a flavoring agent in other dishes. Sardines are OK

I am looking to try some chard and kale at some point. I’d like to find a good local source for pork belly (as opposed to bacon), and I need to branch out into other types of fish besides salmon and tuna.

I don’t have any problem limiting nuts, dairy, or cheese. Anything really. Once I got the sugar and starch thing beaten, I can pretty much control what and how much I eat. Nothing really triggers me to overeat.

Odd one - aside from dairy and gluten, I can’t eat salmon that’s been reheated. I am perfectly fine eating as much as I like off the grill or pan, but to put it in my lunch and re-heat it in any way? No. can. do. It’s like the chemical make up is different or something?

(Brennan) #37

Chili powder, cayenne, paprika (any and all peppers really), Thai basil (or regular basil), coriander, cumin, so many options!

Variety is the spice of life, but also a variety of spices makes life delicious!

I have never been allergic (food allergies) too anything in my life and I attribute that to eating a lot of ham hocs, pig knuckles and pinto beans along with tripe (cow stomach & intestines) or what is called menudo; been eating this my entire life esp. in my childhood which is a lot like bone broth not only that I love it! Everybody I know including my own (modernized) siblings are allergic to something (auto-immunity and histamine intolerances) because they are so worried the beans are going to make them fart (flatulence) but if you eat them long enough they quit doing that and they were also grossed out by organ meats like tripe and cabeza (cow head meats like brains and eyes etc)… And stuff like chorizo which has a lot of organ meats like lymph nodes and all kinds of other parts…lol

Pinto beans are not really a main keto dietary staple but the pigs feet and knuckles & tripe (menudo) are what really seal up a leaky gut and prevent a leaky gut; not really the pinto beans[1]?

Note: I have had adverse reactions to Stevia on keto, something not right with that stuff? And in-organic sulfur in anti-biotics!

Yup, that’d be me too. However, giving up the hwc has helped. I’m down to three cups from closer to six. Surprise, surprise, I’m sleeping better now.

Very thankful to be quite tolerant of most things.

A few that can cause troubles, in no particular order:

  1. significant amounts of lactose will cause intestinal distresses from gas to diarrhea. Full fat dairy and most cheeses doesn’t bother me much at all.

  2. significant amounts of sugar or carbs, at least enough for “sugar coma” symptoms will mean I won’t feel well. A basic cheat / high carb meal would be a non-issue. A binge would be where I’d start to feel bad. Sick isn’t quite the word but somewhere between queezy and lethargic would be a pretty good description. I don’t want to feel like that.

  3. an overabundance of tannins like if I drank too much tea. I seldom drink anywhere near enough to cause me to feel bad. (Rarely have that kind of tea, anymore.) But I know if I do, I’ll get quite nauseous.

  4. a fake meat product called Quorn. It’s the most violent of the things I can’t handle. I’ll be squirtin’ on both ends within a half hour, even with a few bites of it.

So that said, I am blessed. Even so, there have been things that I’ve limited my consumption of that I was inclined to overdo, such as heavy whipping cream. I suspect there will be things that will be either eliminated or reduced over time that I don’t know about right now. It’s a journey that’s different today than it was when I started 16 months ago and will probably be different 16 months from now. I remain open to new thoughts and ideas and hope to continue to learn and grow in my understanding of how my own body works and reacts to the fuel it is presented with.
