Anyone else find themselves "sleep eating"?

I’m not actually talking about eating in my sleep, but it wouldn’t surprise me if I did! I have a toddler… I find myself munching on her food when I prepare it or take care of it. It’s like eating in my sleep! Sometimes I don’t even remember taking a bite but I have the taste of her food in my mouth. No wonder I’ve packed on weight since she was born. It’s hard to track carbs when your aren’t aware of what you ate!

I thought you were going to say dream eating - we get a lot of that!

So more just automatic and non-mindful eating? Yeah for sure. It happens really easily with anything snacky and also when you are distracted and tired. BUT erm… big BUT here. You are a new mum. You will no doubt be tired, probably stressed and IDK what else as I haven’t done it Be forgiving of yourself here. You can do what you can do and no more. Ideally, restrict what you have in the house to prepare for other family members and then the likelihood of this happening will be mitigated by the fact that you will be sleep-eating keto so no big deal. Also, if you are munching on things like veg, it really is not that big a deal, even if they are the sometimes much derided carrot!

I think you are pretty amazing to just function quite frankly, having seen siblings go through child birth and rearing. So gig hugs from me. xxx

I’ve done this when preparing foods for others. I’ll put something in my mouth and immediately be like, “ETC did I just do?” And I’ll spit it out. I have no advice, just solidarity. It happens. Maybe it’s just a matter of retraining ourselves not to snack while good preping.

As part of my job, I prepare food for others, including things like baking banana bread and chocolate chip cookie bars…

If I had a nickle for everytime I had to consciously stop myself from licking a finger or a beater, I’d be a damn millionaire.

It gets easier with time. Just like tasting as you go was habit, NOT tasting as you go can become habit…

Yes! as a mother/family cook I do taste quite a bit without realizing it, and when my children were little, I would have to finish their plates to reduce waste, so I even stopped making enough food for me, knowing I would end up eating theirs. Luckily, more and more of the entire families meals are keto, as I use up the oatmeals and spinach pastas, and don’t replace. I also find that the past month or so, they ask for less. They used to have 2 pieces of toasted bread with their eggs, now they maybe eat one, or a much lower carb crumpet. My daughter even ate cloud bread with cream cheese one recent morning…thank goodness she did, because I’m not a fan. Anyway, I sure do ramble, but yes, I “sleep eat” from time to time but am getting better at catching it

My problem is that I’ll intentionally take out something to eat… a couple of pieces of cheese or some nuts for example, but then I’ll eat them without noticing or remembering. I mean, I KNOW I set the food out for me to eat, but when I go to take the next bite, it’s gone. I’m tempted to blame the dogs, but they don’t actually counter surf, so it must be me!

Yes, I had this problem a lot in the first few months. I do daycare and would find myself mindlessly munching goldfish crackers or something. You will get more mindful as you go. Like @Brenda mentioned, it’ll become a habit to be more mindful and not snack.

Also, I can imagine how hard it would be to make those things for a living and not nibble or “lick the spoon” afterwards. I make my nephews’ birthday cakes every year and I made one Saturday and it was harder than I expected to not do that out of old habits.
