Anyone commiting carbicide on Thanksgiving Day?

(Running from stupidity) #123

I’ve been doing this for 20 years. It’s awesome.

Make & take your own! Chicken stock, heavy cream, & some spices and simmer it down. You don’t need but about 1/2 cup even for a mountain of turkey. I doubt they’ll have an issue with that. And if you ARE gluten sensitive, this spares you the agony.

Me personally, I can’t stand the headache/ carb hangover. I learned the hard way that cheating isn’t worth it for me. I really, REALLY feel like crapzilla when I cheat.

I’ve always made gravy with flour and I wonder if this will be watery. I suppose I could add a little almond flour. I think I will try this after the holiday since where I am going, the food will be already prepared (non-keto friendly). Thanks for the idea.

This will be a good experiment for me. If I really do feel like crap, it will restrengthen my commitment to LCHF.

I have been reading about carb refeeds which are good for stalls and for replenishing leptin (the starvation hormone/hunger hormone). This should give me a basis for how I plan to eat after I meet my target weight (currently 10 pounds away!). Some carb refeeders say 200-300 carbs of potatoes, fruits, beans etc with little fat ingestion. I don’t plan on going that overboard… maybe 60-75 carbs tops.

Thanks but I’m already past the initial stages of keto. My behavior toward food is completely changed. The upcoming feast is a choice, not a necessity and I’m fully confident I can avoid sugars and stick to moderation.

My understanding is that almond flour won’t work, so I haven’t tried it. I just saw a gravy recipe using coconut flour, so I’m going to try that (makes sense, since it seems to suck the moisture up in recipes), but I also have xanthan gum and glucomannan at the ready if it doesn’t get thick enough. It takes both some simmering to reduce and a little judicious thickening, but it is worth experimenting. As long as your host doesn’t put too much flour in the roux (sp?), it shouldn’t be too terrible on carbs anyway.

However, I plan on using a lot of gravy! :smiling_imp:

I’m headed to the kitchen right now to make the cream soup for the green bean casserole and two stuffing experiments. :innocent:

Totally! I enjoy trying new things more since starting keto. It’s like I had a taste bud transplant and everything is different now.

Good luck and enjoy.

My advice from someone coming up on my ketoversary and who has had high carb meals on very rare occasions w/o too many negative effects:

Enjoy your holiday with your family and don’t stress out over what to eat or not eat! Enjoy a taste of everything that looks good. You may be surprised at how much faster you get full and want to stop eating. It varies a lot from person to person and you won’t know until you try it.

For me personally I feel so much better on keto that after I have had a higher carb meal I can’t wait to get back into ketosis. For some they fall off the wagon and struggle to get back on.

(Carl Keller) #131

LOL this is what I am already looking forward to.

One Holiday meal, or even the whole day, is fairly insignificant when following a lipolytic nutritional pattern. If anything, it’s a metabolic positive. The major effects will be minor water retention and possibly some bloating. The bloating is a nice reason for a couple of after dinner cordials, usually digestifs such as Jägermeister, Drambuie , or an Amaro, all which clears it up quickly.

It’s a Holiday, not Carbicide. Myself, I’ll have some Pastis before eating, then some Jägermeister after dessert, along with some Dark Roast Coffee.

I’m looking forward to some pie and a scotch. Maybe I’ll buy one really good beer. Haven’t had a beer in six months.

I’ve read quite a few folks who use a little Cream Cheese to help make Gravy as well. (I’ve used it with making gravy with Gizzards) Plus, there’s some links on here that have all kinds of ideas on how to make Keto-Gravy. I’m just not sure where I saw them? But think a quick search to find them could be done easily.

I quit drinking beer about 10 years ago. Last summer I had a beer with a friend and I couldn’t even finish half of it. It just didn’t taste like I remembered it (thankfully).

Cream cheese sounds like a good thickening agent instead of flour. I might have to try that as well. The internet has an overwhelming amount of recipes for you-name-it… but many of the recipes I tried were disappointing. I much rather try things that people I talk to have tried and can put their enthusiastic stamp of approval on.

I wonder if a shot of ACV will do the same? I’m not a drinker any more and a shot of anything with liquor is likely to make my face swell a bit.

This is double the carbs I have eaten in the past 10 weeks and I don’t feel terrible. I did stay sugar free. Will see how tomorrow goes…

Well it wasn’t the best day full carb load could have been a lot worse. No dessert couple bad forks of stuff but I’m stalled and so confused right now so a carb load and back on it tomorrow i feel
good about it and don’t regret the dinner and time with family.

I didn’t do too bad today. It helped that my dad did NOT make a sweet potato casserole. I did eat a small piece of the flourless chocolate cake my sister-in-law brought. But it was easy to pass up her potato salad and rolls. Some carbs are worth it occasionally, and some are not. I also had a little bit of dressing.

Basically, I ate what I wanted, left alone the things that weren’t worth it to me, kept it mostly keto, filled up quickly, and had an enjoyable time with family.

And, according to the testing with my new keto mojo, I am still in nutritional ketosis.

Glad to hear you enjoyed yourself. Today is a reward for sticking to our WOE. It’s like letting our tastebuds celebrate a little.

I stuck to mashed potatoes and gravy, a giant turkey leg, green bean casserole and a tablespoon of homemade stuffing. I really felt like I could keep eating but I stopped myself at a single plateful… and 6hours later I feel fine and not hungry so I know I ate plenty.

Lately, I feel like I have an increased appetite, meaning I can keep eating after my modest portions are gone, yet 6, 8, 12 hours later I am not ravenous or feeling deprived. I suppose I am better understanding when to stop. This is the first time I’ve been able to walk away from a thanksgiving table and not feel completely stuffed. This was a really good test for my self control.

At least you enjoyed yourself tonight. Maybe relaxing tonight will help you get out the stall. I have heard some interesting things about carb refeeds and how they can jumpstart stalls.

really great job…compared to me!!!

there are soooo many yum keto sauces and gravys.
You can also make a creamy mustard sauce for ham.
i had some last nite, not sure how, but wing it!
