Anyone commiting carbicide on Thanksgiving Day?

(Carl Keller) #1

I’ve told myself, for the past 2 months, that my reward for staying strict keto would be that I could indulge in a decent turkey day meal. I’m not talking about going crazy on the sweet stuff like pies and sweet potatoes cooked in butter and brown sugar… but maybe a nice leg of turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, some stuffing and green bean casserole. I’ve figured this is around 75-80 carbs.

I’ve never experienced what it’s like to come out of ketosis and I have heard that many people experience bloating, upset stomachs due to the carbs, that things with carbs don’t taste that good in general and that their hunger pangs returned for up to 72 hours.

Can anyone tell me what you experienced when you came out of ketosis because of what you ate? Or what you plan to do for Thanksgiving.

Not an option. We do the event at our house and have all keto with some random light carb stuff for others.

I eat a meal off plan every couple of weeks. I enjoy myself and am back in ketosis sometimes by the same evening. Probably will just have the lamb on thanksgiving, unless our neighbor brings over tamales.

Not me. Just me and my wife for Thanksgiving and we don’t usually do anything extravagant. I am thinking this year we will roast a chicken, and have several sides that will fit both of our eating preferences. I am thinking maybe some steamed broccoli and some sautéed yellow squash, and perhaps sweet potatoes for my wife. I can add butter to whatever veggies and keep the portion sizes under control. Wife can have the sweet potatoes and rolls.

I will miss having pumpkin pie with whipped cream, but you just have to give up some things if you want to lose weight.

Tamales and Lamb would be an interesting combination!

i love lamb! I miss Mexican.

I wish I were coming to your house for Thanksgiving. I’m invited to an Aunt’s for dinner and I don’t want to seem rude by just having turkey and gravy on my plate after she and her daughters have gone through all the trouble of making a dozen side dishes.

(Carl Keller) #8

Now this I could do! But where I am going I doubt plain vegetables will be an option.

Same here! You’ve given me the idea to see if I can find any keto friendly mexican dishes. Thanks for that.

I haven’t entered, and therefore, haven’t exited, ketosis, if those damn pee strips are to be believed. But I’ve maintained a strict LCHF discipline, through Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and various other sundry feasts. I’ve been maintaining my weight and delighted with the results.

Last Thanksgiving was my first LCHF Thanksgiving. I absolutely LOVED sticking to script. I focused on family and helping in the kitchen. There was no shortage of delicious food I could eat. I was one of the precious few with extra energy after the meal.

I fear my body is severely insulin resistant, so I’ve come to the realization this is my new normal, if I don’t want to swell up. Gravy, sweet potatoes or apple isn’t worth it, for me. If your insulin can handle it, then, enjoy.

Just watch that whole carbs lead to craving more carbs thing. That remains my greatest fear, like an alcoholic’s first drink after sobriety.

Bon Appétit!

Nice that you have somewhere to go and a family event to enjoy. Eat however you see fit and deal with the consequences later, I guess. You could do a 24 or 36 hour fast before the big day, or do a fast afterwards, to minimize the impact.

I will be enjoying my thanksgiving and eating whatever I want in moderation. The next day I’ll be right back on track, no biggie for me

Even before keto I usually just took out the cheese and chilis from the inside. I’ve always been (there’s one in every bunch) that person who peels off the toppings from pizza, leaving what other people refer to as “the best part.” Actually, taco salads are good, just don’t eat the shell. And you can make tacos using a cheese shell.

I wouldn’t stress over it Carl.

Even 100g of carbs is generally a non-issue.

Eat liberally of the keto friendly stuff. And have some of the borderline stuff. The greenbean casserole may not be so bad. There might be another veggie that won’t be so bad. Even a little sweet potato may not be as bad as you might think. Stuff like the mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce in the shape of a can, and the desserts, just go light.

Don’t feel guilty about enjoying a little of the stuff on the naughty list on an occasion like that. It’s family time and unless you have serious medical limitations on your diet to the point that enjoying just a little will really and truly make you physically sick, just enjoy the day. Enjoy the food. Enjoy the company. And then the day after, get back to your keto way of eating.

If you really do only add an extra 80g of carbs, you may never even know you slipped out of ketosis and you will probably be back in by the next day. Really, it’s nothing to worry about.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Don’t eat the gravy! It has Fluor

(Ethan) #16

How bad is your t2dm?

#17

Well said sir! And definitely worth having it posted twice! … Couldn’t have said it better myself!

(Brian) #18

Doesn’t exist, I went keto before I ever got there. No more issues.

(Ethan) #19

Hence why you can say it’s ok if you eat 100g once. Some of us are too far gone.

(Mike Glasbrener) #20

No! I’ll likely consume more. I’ve worked too hard to try to get more metabolically healthy…
