Hey lovely people, so I have recently found out to be pregnant…so what now? Should I just continue like I normally would or should I up my carbs intake a bit? Any advice would be great …Thanks a million
Any of you ladies got pregnant and continued Keto? Any tips?
congratulations!
i would bump the veggie carbs, add root veggies too like carrots, beets and sweet potatoes. eat liver at least once a week and sardines regularly.
but if you get a craving for pizza or a burger, don’t deny yourself! there is low carb ice cream too!
Congratulations Lana! I have no experience with being pregnant on keto, but I suggest joining the Kickarse Keto Bitches FB group. Many recent keto moms and a few pregnant KKBs who could give you some great advice.
@AnnaLeeMI is due soon I believe and was keto throughout her pregnancy.
Congrats!
For me it was important not to increase my carbs if possible. I get Gestational Diabetes right away. I basically ate to keep my blood sugar controlled, but I still needed to be on two medications: metformin and glyburide. I’m 38 weeks tomorrow and waiting on baby any day.
I say get through the first trimester whatever way you can. Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t stay strict Keto. If you have nausea and food aversions you have to just get past it. Find foods that work for you and keep it simple. Once you are feeling better you can tweak the diet back if needed.
Get a glucometer if you don’t already have one. Once your provider wants to do a glucose tolerance test make sure they know you eat low carb and that the test will be inaccurate, so you would prefer to track your blood sugar with your normal eating for a week or two.
My wife’s Dr did an Hba1c last week in lieu of the glucose test. May be another option.
This test done in the first trimester is a good predictor of GD. Later in pregnancy it is unreliable due to the change in red blood cell turnover.
for maintenance so she doesn’t lose weight but gain what she is supposed to. Unless she has medical conditions like gestational diabetes, i don’t see anything wrong with eating some extra minerals and vitamins. Pregnant women have to increase calories by 1,000 I believe, something like that.
I am also pregnant and following a keto type diet. I can recommend ‘Real Food for Pregnancy’ by Lily Nicholas. Its an excellent book that will guide you through how to eat a keto type diet that is healthy for Pregnancy. The author is a dietician and all her advice is based on real science.
