Any canned soups you can have on keto diet?

I’ve been sick last couple days and feeling lazy on cooking. Curious if canned soup is okay on keto? Plus soup always speeds up the process of getting better for me.

Check the labels and look at the amount of carbs per serving… I’m guessing it will depend on the type of soup… with a chicken broth probably being better than pea and ham or something like that.

Some Progresso soups have 8 to 10 net carbs per cup (not per can).

It’s pretty easy to heat up chicken broth and fold an egg into it, for egg drop soup.

A quick microwave “dump” soup I make regularly:

  • Throw a mix of (possibly frozen) veggies (usually broccoli, cauliflower, carrots) into this microwave bowl.
  • Top with spices (Italian seasoning, onion powder, garlic powder, smoked paprika, …) and butter.
  • Microwave for several minutes.
  • If I want smaller veggie pieces, I chop with this.
  • Add whatever I have available – diced onions/celery/radishes, mushrooms, leftover meats, shredded cheese, hot pepper slices.
  • Add broth and/or unsweetened coconut milk.
  • Cover with slice of pepper jack cheese.
  • Microwave again for a few minutes.

Since everything is made and served up in the one bowl, cleanup is easy.

Thank you! Im real big on tomato soup. Should I check anything else on the label? I know to look at the carbs. I’m so drowsy today and not up for cooking at all. I just want something quick and easy.

Tomato soup usually has a lot of sugar. If you absolutely do not want to make even a simple low carb soup, then find what you want with the lowest carbs you can. It may knock you out of ketosis for a while, but unless you have serious blood sugar/insulin problems, the trade off may be worth it.

You have to decide for yourself what tradeoffs are worth it to you.

Okay thank you! Maybe I’ll just munch on some veggies. And have some hot tea

Buy some canned chicken broth and throw some cabbage/spinach/etc in the pot with it.
Don’t forget to top off your bowl with some Parmesan cheese and black pepper…
Easy as 1-2-3.

Thank you! That sounds really good! I think I might do that.

Hard to find one these days w/o HFCS added. When I was a kid I loved Campbell’s tomato soup but it was tart back then because they didn’t add the HFCS. I wish they would offer the original recipe again

I’ve looked in the grocery store for a canned soup, but none were what I would call a good fit for me.

Whenever I feel a cold coming on I make broth with a powdered soup base. Then I add a tbsp or two of leftover fat like bacon grease, chicken or beef far etc. My colds always seem to disappear quickly. You could add any veggies you want to it.

I went and looked today too and ended up just getting pepperoni and cream cheese to snack on.

I have a variation of a recipe I’m planning to try, just throwing together:

  • 3 parts Rao’s Marinara sauce
  • 2 parts chicken stock
  • 1 part heavy whipping cream (or unsweetened coconut milk)
  • Spices

Some variations I’ve seen:

I was planning to make some “grilled cheese” to go with it, using Joseph’s Lavash Bread.

A very simple but delicious clam chowder- just add 2 cans whole baby clams and 2 cans of Rotel diced tomatoes with chilis to a 32 oz oz. carton of vegetable broth, then add some kale and spinach. Perfectly keto friendly and delicious and no more work involved than opening commercial canned soups full of chemicals, carbs and sodium. This recipe will give you enough for 6 nice bowls of soup.
