I started showing having ketones on the strips on July 2nd. I started feeling like utter crap on the 11th. Felt like I was going through actual drug withdrawals. It let up after about a week and I started having sporadic heart palpitations. I seem to finally got a hold on that. My main issue now is a few days ago tingles started. They are all over. I had a comprehensive metabolic test done and everything was normal. They seem to start up late afternoon. Any idea? I can’t get in to see my doctor until the 4th and I now he’s just gonna give me crap about the diet. My plan is to go carnivore, but I want these tingles gone.
Annoying Tingles
All very very normal, it just sounds like you are incredibly sensitive to stress.
Cutting out carbs puts your body into stress, which can feel very similar to anxiety.
Are you having any changes to your sleep? Tight jaw? Are you more irritable? Feel tired but restless?
The drug withdrawal feeling, tingles and heart palpatations are all anxiety symptoms.
I suppose it would be sensible to say you should see your Dr any way to be sure.
But you can bin the ketone strips. They only tell you what extra ketones you have, its a con because when you are in ketosis you won’t have any extra ketones as you’ll be producing the right amount.
Stop eating carbs and you’ll be in ketosis, you don’t need strips to tell you that.
Getting enough sleep has always been hard for me, but it does seem I’m getting less. Been waking up early and can’t get back to sleep.
Today I didn’t really notice them at all. I went to a museum and walked around for a few hours. When I got home and sat at the computer to get some work down around 4:30 they started up. It’s seems they only start up when I’m not physically active, but they don’t bother me much when I’m laying in bed to go to sleep
A lot of times it’s from lack of circulation, or nerves. That timing seems to fit circulation, though. Doesn’t happen when you’re active, and when you’re laying down blood flows much easier because it’s not fighting gravity or contracting muscles. If you can, next time it starts up, get up and go for a power walk or something, once you’re really moving and your heartrate and BP are up a little, if it goes away, that’s your answer. How’s your activity levels overall? Are you on BP meds or anything?
I have more energy then before. Not on any BP meds. I checked my blood pressure two days ago and it was 124/84. Which is in the middle for me. Normally 116-136
@Katnipp Welcome to the forum. Just wondering if you’re getting enough electrolytes (salt) and staying properly hydrated?
Cutting out carbs prompts your body to lose a lose of water weight - and salts (NaCl, Mg, K) get jettisoned along the way.
Magnesium is an important element when it comes to muscle relaxation. Both palpitations and “tingles” might be related to a salt/magnesium deficiency.
Something to consider.
Yes I’ve been using keto IV in my water and trying to eat avocados, pumpkin seeds and 100% dark chocolate. I had one heart flutter yesterday and so far today none. The “tingles” aren’t like the pins and needles you feel when your foot starts to wake up. It’s like a prick on the calf, then one on the face, then maybe on the stomach. I have also noticed what feels like little twitches around my lips. Yesterday they were under my eyes. But those aren’t there today.
This causes heart palpitations in me, guaranteed. I avoid it now.
Are you managing electrolytes?
That’s exactly what I was wondering!
Has ANYTHING medically different happened since the tingling began? A new herb, supplement, medication, etc?
That’s what I figured because I feel pretty good until they hit. This diet is pretty stressful when reading in to all the nutrients you have to balance and make sure you get plenty of this but not to much of this. Feel like a dang biochemist. It seems like I’m just snacking all through the day to eat things to get this stuff and I’m not even hungry. I’m just hoping it goes away soon.
My first go to is always: are you getting enough salt? I don’t know how much sodium is in keto IV, but make sure you are getting about 5 grams of sodium at day (approximately 2 teaspoons of salt). That’s a good number to start. You can always go up or down from there. I get all kinds of strange symptoms when I haven’t had enough salt.
It’s really not, just carbs and salt so if you use a good quality sea salt it also contains potassium so just salt your food while eating minimal carbs and all good.
According to my tracker I had 1800mg of sodium yesterday. My blood work sodium level was 144 and the normal range says 134-144.
Wow, I’m so sorry to hear this! But in all honesty, you are making perhaps the simplest, most stress-free way of eating (i.e., “keto”) so unnecessarily complicated.
Stop eating carbs. Instead, eat all the healthy fat and protein you feel like eating … whenever you feel like eating it.
Your body will go through changes (for the better) and especially during this time of adjustment (a few weeks for most of us), make sure you drink enough water and be mindful of your salt intake too (get enough!).
If you’re stressing over this, you’re making it too complicated. It’s not.
Best wishes. Keep us posted on your progress.
