Am I going to get kicked off this forum if I admit this?

I take a half teaspoon of actual, non-artificual, white, granulated, full-carb sugar in my coffee every day.

So there! :stuck_out_tongue:

#2

And, are you losing weight?

(Aimee Moisa) #3

LOL

I don’t know, I get OCD when I take the metrics so I don’t weigh myself.

I feel good and isn’t really that all that matters?

#4

Agree 100% if you are hitting your goals. I track nothing so understand. From health point of view if not insulin sensitive then probably very little harm.

(Aimee Moisa) #5

Oh, I forgot to mention that up to about 5 weeks ago I was taking 2 tablespoons of sugar in my coffee multiple cups a day. Now it’s just one cup with 1/2 teaspoon and heavy cream.

(Aimee Moisa) #6

I’m insulin resistant, is that what you mean?

#7

yes picked wrong word, so cutting back is good but you are still causing long term harm. So hope you can become sensitive.

I am hoping that someday soon I can stand the taste of coffee. I’m working on it! Baby steps every day.

Actually, going from 2T to 1/2t from one day to the next was like BAM, smacked straight into the wall. Coffee tastes like battery acid, but the heavy cream helps.

#9

how do you make your coffee? and if drip is it using paper filter?

(linda) #10

Do you think that you have to drink coffee to be KETO?
Bulletproof coffee is popular for many - but the caffeine can negatively effect adrenal glands and coffee itself isn’t all that pure. Don’t get me wrong - I drink it but it sounds like you are pushing yourself to dink coffee - and the best way to drown out the taste is sugar?

  1. please turn in your Keto card and hang your head in shame.

And 2) try a little vanilla and coconut oil in your coffee. I use a blond roast, which is milder.
If you blend in a blender, it will be frothy, like a capaccino. I also add a drop of Stevia, so I may have to turn in my Keto Card too. :joy:

Anyway, I don’t care for the taste of coffee, but I actually like it this way. Reminds me a little of the gas station French vanilla capaccinos.

Making good coffee is an art, and most home gamers get it wrong

(Doug) #13

Embrace coffee, all the acrid bitterness of it, become one with it, surrender yourself to the black hole.

(Michelle) #14

My husband and I dropped sugar cold turkey. Once we drank it that way for a few weeks, sweet coffee tasted nasty.

#15

I dropped sugar cold turkey and then found Keto a few months after. But never sugar coffee, and never have.

#16

coffee and tea should not be used as sugar delivery devices

1/2 tsp of pure sugar has a whopping 2.1g of carbs. It’s not exactly life changing in an of itself.

Personally, I’d probably want at least a whole tablespoon if I were using the real thing so I just don’t go there.

I know sugar isn’t ā€œketoā€ but I’m more of a mind that if it fits in your macros and it’s something you feel like you need, who am I to get all bent out of shape about it?!

ETA: My sweetener of choice for coffee is SweatLeaf liquid stevia. They have vanilla flavored, and also chocolate flavored, too. I like a combo. Keeps me from downing 10g or 15g of carbs just drinking my morning coffee, too.

I would have to completely disagree carbs of sugar, yes in your macros, will not give you good results, to much insulin reaction and what Paul says later about fructose. The macro would be zero g carbs if it wasn’t for the vitamins the carbs are supposed to give you with vegetables. The idea is not carbs, it is health and insulin.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #19

Cold tukey with sugar on it tastes even nastier, lol! :grinning:

It took me years to eliminate sugar from my coffee, but now coffee with the slightest amount of sugar tastes revolting. I learned to eliminate milk from my coffee later on, and I still don’t enjoy the taste of coffee with milk, but I have to say that, under the influence of these forums, I occasionally put cream in my coffee these days, and it tastes nice!

@ladylyssa A single teaspoon of sucrose a day is not likely to harm you, but in combination with the rest of the sugar in your diet, it can become a problem.

The reason is that sucrose is half glucose and half fructose. Glucose is a substance all cells can metabolize, but fructose can be metabolized only in the liver. Too much fructose, too fast, overloads the liver and leads to fatty liver disease, among many other problems. This is why, in addition to keeping carbohydrate low, it is important to avoid sugar as much as possible. Your metabolic health will thank you.

Oh, and fructose also acts on your brain’s reward center the same way heroin, cocaine, and alcohol do, to stimulate cravings. As with those other drugs, not every one becomes addicted, but those who do become addicted can have a serious problem getting free.

?? Not sure where 20g of carbs came from. A half teaspoon is two point one. Maybe the decimal point didn’t make itself obvious. (?) Can happen sometimes. Yes, 20g is a big deal. And maybe even the 2.1 isn’t the best. But I’d get a lot less excited about 2.1 than 21.
