Am I eating enough?

(PJ) #1

I am doing 16/8 fasting everyday now and wondering if I am eating enough? I am getting about 5-6 carbs daily and I just learned that I need to be getting at least 30g protein at each of my two meals. The fact is I’m not very hungry and don’t want much. I’m loving not being hungry but also want to make sure that I don’t over do it. I feel really good and love doing the fasting. Any advice?

You really need to get adequate protein. If you’re feeling good you must be well adapted and don’t need to worry about fat grams and total calories. Those should be provided by those 10 year old Krispy Kremes,

In my experience, if you’re not eating enough protein you’ll start to crave protein foods. If you’re not hungry, cold, or excessively sleepy, don’t worry about it.

Thanks, its more than likely the chocolate and loving to cook with flours! So, I don’t need to worry about not getting enough carbs?

I must be OK because I feel good. By the way, I have chicken roasting in the oven at the moment and I will make sure to get enough protein. I wasn’t getting 30g at each meal but after reading something on that I made sure that I am now getting 30g each meal. This is a totally new experience for me so any help is appreciated.

Nope The goal is to stay under 20g carbs. less is fine. You’re liver can make all the glucose you need. There is a sub-group here doing 0 carb January. They get a few incidental carbs but they strive to not get any plant based carbs.

You haven’t mentioned…how are you doing on progressing towards your goals?

(PJ) #8

Not sure what you mean here?

I’m not sure what your keto goals are…weight loss, T2D control, general health etc
I was just curious if you were making progress towards accomplishing whatever goals you have?

I’ve lost 4 lbs and want to go 30 more. I am in good health and want to stay that way which is why I have began this journey. I have to admit that I feel much better on this woe and hope to remain that way.

Like @jfricke says, your liver can make all the glucose needed, and extending that, there is no such thing as a “carbohydrate deficiency” and not even the biggest proponents of low-fat, high-carb can point to anything that shows a need for carbs. However, we do require protein and fat and there are medical conditions caused by their deficiency.

Thanks Bill, I did really well yesterday with my protein and fats. I think I have it down now. Many thanks to everyone else who helped me understand that.

I just listened to this link which was very good information regarding fasting and how much protein you need. For those of us doing 16/8 you have to get at least 30g protein each meal if eating 2 meals per day.

What would being cold, or sleepy be a symptom of? Not enough calories? Protein?

(Jeff Ryan) #16

I’m getting excessively sleepy now when I fast since losing 12kg. I have 1.5g of protein per LBM but still feel sleepy when fasting.

When I fasted when I was heavier that felt great but now since losing the weight I just feel sleepy all day long.

Should I stop fasting and have my meals earlier since my bf is now lower?

(PJ) #17

I started getting cold and sleepy as well. I am doing better now but still get cold at times. I am watching my sleeping habits now to make sure that I get enough sleep during the night. I am not as sleepy during the day now for some reason. Someone told me that the fat was keeping me warm and now that I am using more of it there’s less fat as before.

Jeffryan, you may need to re-look at your macros and see if they need changed. Others have said that they did after loosing weight. Some were talking about doing it every 10 lbs.

Yes I’ve been adjusting my protein level. I haven’t really lost weight but the mirror says a different story. I’m looking alot more leaner that’s for sure.

I’ve stopped fasting and drinking coffee today and I already feel alot better without the sleepy feeling.

Richard has some math that showed you can get 30 kcal per day from each pound of fat you have. If you have 60 lbs of fat you will only burn 1800 kcal per day of your own fat. If you have less fat than that and you don’t eat enough to make up the difference to what you need, you’ll probably be cold and sleepy. If you don’t have enough fuel, your body will turn the furnace down.

Thanks for the info. Yes that’s the way I feel this week. I was eating late in the night but fasted throughout the day making me sleepy. Since now eating breakfast I feel alot better.
