Am I doing this wrong? (20/4 IF with Keto)

(Harish Singhania) #1

Hello, all,
I’m a newbie to 20/4 IF + Keto diet.
I do regular workouts (muscle gain).
Can someone please point out if 2pm intake of powders is okay or not?

Wake up: 8:00am
Diet: coffee + water (nothing else).

Workout: 2:00pm
Diet:
2 servings of Gold standard Whey protein that has 48 g protein+ 2 g fat+ 220 Calories (total from 2 scoops)
+
1 scoop Juiced amino acids (this has 6000mg Anabolic BCAA & EAA matric)
+
1 scoop BCAA energy
+
1 scoop of animal Pak (these are nutrients)
+
1 scoop Glutamine powder.

Meal: from 7pm- 11pm
Keto recommended diet.

Sleep: from 11 pm-8:00 am

Can one of you heroes please review and let me know if I break this diet plan by having my workout powders?

Regards,
Harish

How many carbs are in the powders? Why do you take them?

(Harish Singhania) #3

Hello, Mike,

Total carbs from the powder shake is not more than 40g.

I got into body building 1.5 years ago and now it has become a part of my lifestyle. I take the powder as a pre workout supplement for all the muscle-gain advantages it offers.

Do you think the powder is damaging the 20/4 keto plan?

Regards,
Harish

What’s up bro?!?! These might be better people to ask.

From what I’ve seen from them, they’re probably going to tell you the powders are unnecessary.

Good luck!

Well … yes. 20/4 means you’re only intaking nutrition for 4 hours a day. 40+ grams of carb outside that window is definitely breaking your fast - and probably taking you out of ketosis as well. Some people make an exception for bullet proof coffee outside their eating window, but that’s because it doesn’t have many carbs and shouldn’t produce much of a glucose / insulin spike.

That’s not to say that what you’re doing is bad or won’t be helpful for your goals, but it’s definitely an n=1 (a personal experiment) that’s not how most people here do IF or keto.

Many thanks for the references.

Many thanks for your comments.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #8

Yes, the BCAA’s help with muscle growth, but you can get them in your food (in fact, you have to; they are essential to the human diet). I would say to eliminate the powder and increase the protein in your meals. Try eating around 2 g/kg LBM and adjust from there as necessary. Get plenty of calories; fat will let you do that without spiking insulin, and it will also help your metabolism.
