I had a really bad day at work today and I wanted pizza so badly to make me feel better! I didn’t do it! I made myself a rib eye and all was well again! It was touch and go for a few hours! I didn’t know if I would make it! But, I kept thinkIng of all the hard work and how much better I was feeling! Carbs are my choice of drug when I feel stressed, depressed or feel anything. It’s definitely time to change that…
Almost ate pizza!
Congratulations on you will power and not giving in to the temptation, Karen!! Well done =). Try to find something else to treat yourself with; a nice bubble bath, with candles, with a magazine or book, or something else that is a treat for you, that is non food related =).
My go-to for pizza (or cheese bread) is Joseph’s Lavash Bread, a flatbread, as a crust. I can do it in about 5 minutes these days. But I’ve also done a Cheesebuns crust or a Poblano peppers crust. And, now, with the latest keto craze, chaffles, you could even do Pizza Chaffles.
When I am stressed and thinking about a carb-laden treat… I remember how really awful I feel when I do it. I don’t mean guilt…I mean physically ill. My stomach and gut rebel and I spend 12 hours feeling sick.
My new “go to” is cinnamon crunch chaffles. Oh geez are they good.
I have found the pizza chaffles to be good. Some of the other pizza recipes (Fat Head) taste good but tend to be a lot cheese. The chaffles are a bit of cheese, too, but are smaller usually and I limit myself to one of them.
A slice of pizza I can deal with or eat a whole pizza by myself.
I always allow myself to have a slice of pizza now and then even a whole pizza, no harm done once your metabolically fit again!
While I eat real pizza at times (maybe a few times per year), it has issues for me. Check out the high blood sugar for a very long time:
By contrast, other meals (even ice cream) cause a rapid rise and rapid fall, the whole curve within an hour.
Pizza also causes me to get asthma and allergies the next day. Wheat and I do not get along. Wheat is evil. So, I avoid real pizza as much as I can, though I live in a location with some of the best pizza places in the world, so I partake sometimes.
We had pizza last night and it was off the chain !
I ate 3 big fat slices. Pepperoni, Salami, olives, Mozzarella, on a Keto crust, with pesto !
So flavorful
Keto crusts are so easy, and work so well. We hadn’t had pizza for several weeks, as I have just been on such a Sous Vide Everything kick…
Now tonight, back to SV Picanha steaks, and baked Brussels with Lankanto Maple and bacon
It sure is tough depriving myself… Lol
When the family orders pizza, I scrape the toppings off and throw away the crust. We are fortunate, in that the local pizza places all offer entrees as well as pizza, so I can usually get meatballs or sausage and pepper and avoid the pizza altogether.
Ya know Paul, I worked at a pizza place for years, and we actually sold a low carb pizza (basically same toppings, just a low carb crust) I never even tried one. For the last 5 years there, I didn’t have one bite of any pizza.
But just going by memory, our keto crusts now, are a lot more substantial, and probably better tasting, than the low carb crust we used at the restaurant.
The restaurants near us tend to do that, too, but it depends. Some of them (like Pepe’s) are pretty much pizza. Some are more “Italian” restaurants where they have other options. This is one of those times where a salad can be helpful.
When I was wearing my CGM, I ate pizza a few times. Each time, there was a very long bout of high blood sugar. I’m not sure if that’s because of the way you eat pizza (piece after piece, with usually a break between, leading to a much longer span of eating than say a steak), or the way pizza affects my blood sugar, or both. This contrasts with, say, ice cream, where the rise and fall in blood sugar is less than an hour.
But if high blood sugar for long periods is bad, then eating pizza has the worst blood sugar profile I saw while wearing my CGM.
That’s a HUGE #NSV and CONGRATULATIONS…
There was a story I read about a guy like me, who agreed he would have his ONE cheat meal, and he got pizza. After year of eating perfectly… (I told myself I could have it every month if I wanted it)…
He ate a large pizza, and had a HORRIBLE reaction. Joint pain, swelling, headaches, etc. He admits he should have stuck with a piece, but he figured it would be a long time before he had it again, and old habits took hold!
I replay that in my head, and I look at Pizza and say “No Fam… I’m Good!”
You did great. And the more times you do that, the better.
At one point, I would go to a local Card Club that always had food. I would do it on my fasting windows to practice WATCHING People eat things in front of me, I could not have. It worked, I got to the point where nothing really phases me. It took about 6 visits. Even if I was starving, I wasn’t crossing THAT LINE!
I used to make Meatza!
In a frying pan, I would put a layer of pepperoni
a couple of tbsp of marinara
loads of mozzarella, a couple of pepperoni for effect.
Cover and cook until the cheese melted nicely.
I slide it onto a wooden cutting board, and sliced it up with a pizza roller.
It met the needs of the craving…
Alas, no dairy, no tomatoes any more… Gone are the days…
