Allergic to coconut... help!

#1

Hello all! I’m brand new to keto and brand new to this form. I have a ton of food sensitivities, like eggs, avocados, almonds, peanuts, dairy, and coconut. It seems that every fat bomb has either coconut or dairy or almonds in it. I’m struggling trying to keep my fat where it should be without increasing my protein. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!!

Olive oil and lots of fatty meats. With any luck, some of your sensitivities will improve over time. I don’t do fat bombs and get most of my fat from olive soaked spinach and bacon grease. As far as dairy, butter is only 1% lactose so if you can handle it, easy to get fat there. If not, ghee is butter without any lactose so might work. I hate coconut oil and don’t do milk or cream

Although I don’t have specific suggestions for replacements (apart from olive oil) , I will say this, I have seen lots of videos by doctors recommending Keto way of life and they have said leaky gut is as the root cause of a lot of conditions and after eating this way for substantial length of time that often the things you reacted to before your gut doesn’t react to after the leaky gut is dealt with.

So perhaps down the line at some point you will be able to eat some of those foods again. All the best!

I think Lesley may be right. I have much better digestion now that wheat is off the menu. This way of eating fights inflammation. For now salads with lots of olive oil. Bacon, fatty meats,

Agree with the others…start simply No Sugar, No Grains. Get those out of your diet for a few months and then re-test your " food sensitivities" Not with a doctor’s test, but with your own reaction to those foods. Wheat is hidden in many products, like soy sauce, so try to watch out for those products too.

Thamk you for your reply, unfortunately I’m not allergic to lactose, I’m allergic to casein which is the protein in Dairy, so all a dairy is off limits. The olives spinach sounds good, but alas I’m also allergic to spinach hahaha. Thank you anyway for your ideas!

Thank you for the help! I definitely have leaky gut, something I’ve dealt with for years, and I’ve been gluten-free, grain-free, dairy free, and almost all sensitivities free for years now. Including eggs and the like. I’m hoping that this keto helps with all of that.

Ghee is casein free. Unfortunate to be allergic to spinach. That’s of course just a vitamin and fiber rich filler so you could put oil on any vegetables you can eat. I don’t do well with dairy or legumes so olive oil and ghee are good fat sources

(Janet) #9

Yikes. That is a lot to deal with. Have you considered seeking out a Functional Medicine Doctor to search for other causes? So you will be removing all sugar and processed seed oils and adding meat on Keto?

I have seen 6 NDs the last 10 years and the one in currently seeing is the one that our me on KETO to try and get rid of SIBO

Lard and tallow, of course…

#12

Except for coconut I’m sensitive to all the same foods you are with the addition of cashews, cayenne, and conch. I’m trying to figure out keto without dairy and eggs etc… myself. I feel like fasting is so much easier. No choices water or water? Good luck.

(Michael ) #13

For sure, but unfortunately you have to eat eventually. :joy:

I wonder if a vegetable butter substitute would work. I use soy, free earth balance for my dairy free daughter.

That sounds kinda suspect? Doesn’t have any trans fats does it? Ghee is butter without lactose or casein. Wouldn’t think it would be an issue

I cook my greens and dress my salads in beef tallow (melted). It’s amazing! It’s also mostly saturated fat which is more stable than unsaturated fat (including olive oil). Try to find a good grass fed source for the tallow.

(Karen) #17

Is lard, beef tallow??

#18

Lard comes from pigs, tallow is rendered beef fat.

(Michael ) #19

Semantics. I refer to all of it as flavor enhancers

There is avocado oil if coconut is out of the picture for you.
