Hey, totally new to this, but I’ve been tracking everything pretty well, feel great, and down 20 lbs, exercise regularly. However, I’ve com into a problem. Some of The vehicles we use at work have ignition interlock devices (breathalyzer) and for the past 3 days I have had a steady b.a.c of .03. After some research it can be attributed to my diet. Couldn’t get it to go down, with time or water consumption. Yesterday I loaded up on carbs and sugars and b.a.c returned to zero within a couple of hours. Is there any way to keep this diet long term without having to worry about alcohol showing up in your system?
Alcohol production
Looks like they have the cheap breathalyzers which also read breath acetone as alcohol.
I wouldn’t think that you’d need to give up keto, just not be fasting before the breath test.
Am I wrong?
I havnt been fasting. It was a steady .03 for a few days. Had a banan before bed Saturday night and still .03 in the morning. Drank some apple juice and a candy bar and it went back to zero. But that put me almost 3x my carb load for the day
The bottom line is what @Dipper_Actual said. It’s not alcohol in your breath, it’s acetone, and acetone is the byproduct of burning ketones. So you really can’t do keto without blowing positive on a cheap breathalyzer, or at best going in and out of ketosis like you discovered, by carbing up, which is really less than optimal if you want the benefits of ketosis and fat adaptation. You need to either show the science to your boss, or encourage them to get an expensive bac meter that doesn’t confuse alcohol and acetone, or offer to submit to a blood test instead of a breath test. ETA: I have a cheap meter because I want to track acetone. In two months I’ve never been below .02.
