I was wondering if alcohol by itself will end a fast. I’ve started a fast a day ago and a friend invited me for drinks. I have no intentions of ending my fast at this point but would like to partake a drink with my friend - unless of course it ends my fast.
Alcohol on EF
It might depend on whether it’s got carbs and how much you drink. But, the body will burn the alcohol before the stored fat. I don’t know if that constitutes ending a fast.
It depends on what you consider a fast is.
If you are on a water fast - alcohol is not water - so you would break a water fast.
Similar to a “fat fast” or a “juice fast” you could say you are on an “alcohol fast” I guess (doesn’t have much of a healthy ring to it ).
Maybe you are confusing the idea of fasting (or not fasting) with the idea that some alcohol (whiskey, vodka etc.) will not knock you out of ketosis? (It does stall fat burning but you’ll be keto after it leaves your system.)
Honestly, if you really want to keep your fast going - stick with water.
A few drinks with zero carbs (which generally don’t taste too good) will lower inhibitions and maximize the “munchies”.
Also, even a few drinks fasted hit hard and fast - way faster than you expect (avoid driving even if you think you are okay).
But, get through the night otherwise fasted and guess what - the next morning your body is going to tell you the only acceptable hangover cure is to eat something.
If it is a really special occasion (i.e. worth moving your fast for) I would simply plan to restart the fast after the hangover and eat normally to avoid the problems of drinking on an empty stomach.
Thanks so much. You hit the nail on the head. I decided I wanted to keep the fast going and skip the drinks.
I’ll also be sure not to break my fast with whiskey when it’s time.
I wouldn’t recommend alcohol on a fast for a host of reasons. Not a great idea in my view.
