Adaptation and energy demands

#1

Hey all

As I’ve already mentioned in other posts I’m still in the adaptation process, roughly 2 weeks in.
My daily intake started on the low end but now I’m steadily having 2000-3000 calories, 80% fat, 5% carbs and 15% protein. My carbs will either come from a beer exclusively (dunno how much this affects ketosis, still under 20g) or a salad.
Electrolytes are in check.

I feel like I’m already eating too much (CICO mentality still creeping in) but I never overdo it, just eating when hungry and to satiety. I wouldn’t mind it but my job now has me on rotating day and night shifts. I’m a productive-during-the-day kind of person and not a night owl so i can’t force myself to sleep enough during the day, not more than the absolute necessary anyway. My body could be dying from exhaustion yet my mind is full of energy. No sleeping aids help, given that my house is far from a quiet environment as well and i can’t change that. That means I find myself getting 4-5 hours of sleep a day at best. Overall I’m more than ok with that, so many things to do!

But in keto, esp during adaptation this drains me. Huge fatty meals that used to carry me for 16-24 hours don’t cut it anymore. I feel hungry all the time and it’s hard to separate messed up ghrelin signals due to sleep deprivation and actual hunger because I burn energy off.
It doesn’t matter what I eat, 6 hours later I feel hungry and very low energy.

For example yesterday I had 2 chicken thighs, 2 huge beef/pork patties with mozzarella, a couple of saucages and a small steak. All smeared with butter.
I felt I couldn’t eat again for days. 10 hours later a BPC with lots of butter and coconut oil, felt decent.
5 hours in I felt like crawling, had an emergency 3-4 fried eggs, felt amazing and energetic…for an hour. Ended up finishing half a tub of peanut butter lol. I don’t eat pb much during keto it was a one time thing coz I didnt have the energy to cook anything.
Ended up with, what, 4000 calories? I mention cals a lot and I know counting is not part of keto but it’s just so you get an idea. Now I’m hungry again, and somewhat bloated.

This is the only issue I never had when not on keto. I would snack on low calorie sugary stuff (worst thing for my body I know) and my energy levels/hunger would be more stable. Plus I was never bloated. I don’t like thinking about that!
Any clues? Is this just a temporary thing?

Hello! I also am beginning my Keto journey. I was so horribly exhausted in weeks two and three. The fog lifted for me around the end of week four, which I just completed. I was able to begin to exercise a bit. I do have my calories way up with fat and have gained a bit of weight, so I am hoping this is all part of the fat adaptation process. I have a serious desire to clean and I’m running around my house getting rid of clutter and junk. Hopefully the energy just keeps coming! Don’t know if it is a coincidence but I forced myself to keep moving during the exhaustion, even though I could barely run five minutes when I’m used to running 40. Good luck with everything and good health wishes to you!

Hello  thanks for your post. I’m looking forward for that to happen (energy to do things) because right now I’m not forcing myself to move but I’m forced to, my job is physical (to get an idea my pedometer reads 20-30000 steps at work alone). Im also already exercising lightly, I love it too much to quit it. So yeah it doesnt feel sustainable at this particular moment but I love keto too much to quit before actual fat adaptation with all the goodies happens!
Happy for you, you’re just there!

Hang in there, with all that activity you are sure to turn the corner soon and begin to feel better. I over did it today, felt like I could power clean forever and now crash and burn at 4 pm. Getting there I guess! Wonder what the next month holds for us!
