Hi Shannon. Ditto what the others have said but also we all take different amounts of times to adapt to this WOE so maybe it will just take a bit longer. At the beginning after runs I would be bone weary and not know what to do with myself but it is an anti inflammatory diet. It doesn’t happen overnight though. Keep going and keep it simple.
Aches and pains- can I help myself more here
Thanks for this. I definitely will and will try and tweak things and see if it makes a difference. I think the added exercise, albeit mild, and also the cloudy weather may be factoring in too. For some reason I can always feel the rain coming by the way my body feels. I appreciate your help and will continue to carry on.
I do understand. I limped into this WOE and it’s taken my aches and given me energy beyond my wildest dreams. I will only leave LCHF, kicking and screaming.
I smell Costco trickery. Honey, in its simplest form has about 5.6 carbs per teaspoon. Unless Costco has discovered a way to remove the natural sugar from honey, I bet they are using an artificially flavored honey in lieu of the real thing. Either that or they are just plain lying about the carb content.
The problem with many artificial sweeteners is that they may not influence blood glucose levels, but most, if not all, heavily influence insulin levels. This hormone is the key for healthy weight loss and our goal should be to provoke it as little as possible.
After having quit sugar and substances posing as sugar (except a little stevia in my coffee), I ate some “honey” baked ham a few months ago. I tried to wipe off the reddish glaze as best I could, but an artificially sweetness permeated the meat. Besides it not tasting very good, it upset my stomach for about an hour after I ate. This confirms things I’ve read that suggest artificial sweeteners can do bad things to our gut microbiome. That’s probably another good reason to limit things that taste sweet and promise you zero carbs.
Thank you for this Carl. This makes sense to me- a person very uneducated in all things sweeteners and such as I used to just eat whatever as long as it was within my calorie count. I really want to feel my best and understand the reasons behind it so that I can make smarter choices in future. Thanks for taking the time to write this response.
I’m so sorry, I see how that would’ve seemed unkind but I was just sassing @juice - it wasn’t meant as a slight to you!
The food companies can be really tricky around declaring carb content- I think this Dr Ken Berry video explains things pretty well and I hope it helps
As you can see from the nutrition label, which I have taken from the Web site of the Honey Smoked Fish Company, a two-ounce serving of this salmon contains a gram of sugar. U.S. labeling laws permit any amount per serving that comes to under a gram to be listed this way. In such a case, I assume that the amount of sugar is 0.99999999 g/serving, or 0.49999999999 g/oz. This means that a 14-oz. serving would contain 7 grams of sugar.
Kindness comes naturally to Mon. I can vouch for her sassing @juice. He brings the sass out of the best of us.
I really appreciate all the advice I’ve gotten and the links. Thank you for this bc I didn’t realize! I do however only eat a 2 oz serving a day, so not too much, and I figured it was similar to other items that have very little added sugar. I will change this up though and see how I feel. Hopefully it does the trick!
I appreciate this video and also your sentiments. Today has been emotionally and physically rough and I probably was too sensitive. Thanks though and I will take the info to heart and be more careful from here on out.
Hi @Shannon11,
You mentioned earlier that you don’t eat dairy but do use heavy cream and butter. If you are avoiding dairy for health reasons (I, for example, get terrible aching joints from dairy) then I would suggest not having any dairy at all. Even though butter and heavy cream are mostly fat, they still have milk proteins in them. Maybe they are causing your aches.
Some great advice here. Just chiming in to share that after getting well adapted to keto, and after natural moving to eating once or twice a day, I started to better notice some foods that don’t play nice with my body. Before there was too much noise, but now I can better tell that some foods are less than optimal for me.
I take it into consideration, and try to make sure that I don’t rely on those troublesome foods too often. But if they are just a nuisance, not real trouble, I allow them on occasion with awareness that there could be some consequences.
For you it could be the salmon. I’ve found that there are a lot of things I can have in rotation, but not constantly. Maybe dial it back a bit, and see how it goes from there. A dairy experiment might be enlightening as well.
Great work listening to your body!!!
As for hidden carbs, when I’m playing food detective and really trying to clamp down on hidden carbs, I round up all foods that are made with carby ingredients. When doing this, I was shocked to find that a clove of garlic is a gram of carbs! This helps me dial myself back in and deal with any creeping issues, then I go back to guesstimating again after getting a good solid feel for carb counts. I have pain issues too that can be helped with keto with good electrolyte control. So I definitely hear you!
Any chance you are pushing the stroller differently and you are using a less developed set of muscles that are just seizing and complaining? And maybe spending more time pushing her on the swings and otherwise playing with her at the park? You might be getting some sneaky extra exercise from feeling good.
Hi! Thanks for this thought. I rarely have HWP, typically only if I make a “gravy” like sauce to add fat to lean meat, but I could easily replace this with maybe a drizzle of oil or a brown butter sauce. Butter would be so hard for me to drop, I put it in my coffee, my food, I don’t eat it 24/7 but it’s definitely something I use often. I originally stopped dairy (cheese, cheese wisps, etc) for the same reason I stopped nuts. I found it way too easy to snack on it and not listen to my cues, but I also realized it makes me bloated. So I will cut out HWC and see what that does, and then if maybe also butter. Would ghee be a good replacement? Is that DF and where would I find it? I shop Sprouts and Costco. Thank you again!!!
This is such an eye opening response and I can’t thank you enough for it! I was eating salmon daily for lunch bc it was easy and filling, definitely going to dial it back and then when I do eat it again really be in tune with my body to see if I have any issues. It will also be homemade salmon so I know exactly what the marinade is made of.
A light went off when you asked about pushing her in the stroller. The last time I religiously went for this walk to the park (2 miles there, 2 miles back) was last summer and she was much lighter. So I definitely think I could be working into some muscles I haven’t used and for some reason the fatigue and pain caused by this just startled me and got me feeling down. Ten years ago I took several kinds of medication and even a daily injection to deal with this pain, it was much better as I got my life sorted and then had children, but when it acts up again I tend to get anxious and scared even if I can’t vocalize it and worry that it will overcome my life again. I enjoy being medication free and having power over my body. Funny enough, and I have no idea if their is science behind this, the pain often comes when it’s a very cloudy day or rain is coming.
Thanks for the help and today is a much better day, even having 2 oz salmon for breakfast yesterday. I will continue to diary my food and exercise and see what happens.
Looks like a quarter of a gram of carbs per 56g serving.
I suspect that’s because any honey in the cure is spread thin over the surface of the entire loin or filet.
This isn’t terrible though, right? I won’t be getting it again until I sort these issues and can determine if it caused it, but the numbers themselves aren’t awful right?
No, it’s not even really a problem. The other things in ocean farmed salmon might be, but the honey used in the cure before smoking is not likely an issue. I would still count it as 1g, given USDA rounding rules.
Thank you for helping me to understand and also confirming I wasn’t crazy. I do try and get fresh salmon when it’s in the budget, but this was such an easy, on the go option. Thanks for your input!
Avocado oil is good for high heat cooking, as is regular olive oil. Extra virgin is best eaten unheated! But regular olive oil is my fave for roasting veggies. I usually sautee in avocado oil and butter
Glad it was helpful!
As for the salmon, if these aches and pains are from activity it might have nothing to do with how you are feeling. Still, if you can portion out the salmon or any other treat to have it less frequently it is probably a best practice. And keeps it special. I find that when I put the same meal on repeat for too long it causes problems for me. But on the other end of the scale, there are people who eat only a few things all the time and they are fine if not vastly improved by the limitation.
Just keep being a food detective. You will learn what you love that loves you back.
