About to go on a major carb/calorie bender. Curious what to expect

So far after just over 7 weeks my results have been fantastic. Started at over 207 and last weight-in was just under 184. So I’ve lost almost 24 lbs and many inches off of my belly.

Here’s my situation… My wife and I are flying to MN to attend the MN State Fair. I grew up in MN and attending the fair was a yearly ritual, much of it devoted to eating all of the delicious decadent food they offer like deef fried cheese curds and corn dogs. We’re already decided we’re not going to worry about carbs/calories at all this weekend so tonight we’ll likely be 2-3 thousand calories and over 100 carbs. Tomorrow will be even worse, probably closer to 4000 calories and hundreds of carbs. As a comparison, I typically consume about 1600 calories and 17 carbs per day.

I’m guessing I’ll probably gain like 2-5lbs and be out of ketosis for a few days? Curious to hear from those that have done this before.

You might not be able to eat as much as you think. Or you’ll have a new friend over the next day made of porcelain.

I had infant considered that my eyes might be bigger than my stomach used to be.

When my hubby and I went to Vegas for our honeymoon I ate and drank whatever I wanted! I personally didn’t have any problems like stomach ache, tiredness, etc. I enjoyed every moment and made lots of memories. Once we returned I got back on keto with no issues. I’ve lost a total of 50 lbs since March! Of course this is just my experience, but I say enjoy yourself and have fun!

The weight you’ll gain will mostly be water, but you probably won’t gain a whole lot of fat weight. If you think of it in CICO terms, you’re not going that much over maintenance calories if you consider that you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking in a fair setting. 3000 calories would be about maintenance level for me, and 4000 would be approximately a 1000 calorie surplus. It takes 3500 calories OVER maintenance to gain even 1 pound of fat. You probably won’t do that over the weekend.

The water weight you will most certainly gain due to loading up on carbs is going to make that not so apparent at first, but once that come of you’ll probably be at just about the weight you started at.

I was curious about this. I was thinking that due to the fact that my body has been in carb deprivation mode for two months now it’ll be like: Let’s shove as much of that glucose we can into fat for the next “lean” times making it more of a fat storage machine than it used to be in the presence of carbs.

(Roy D Rushing Jr ) #8

I imagine it’ll store whatever it can, but it’ll burn a lot too because you’ll have to be getting energy from somewhere. Your body can still burn carbs and likes to whenever it gets the chance. One thing that can happen is that insulin will shove too much of it into fat cells and you’ll end up feeling drained and hungry despite the calorie surplus. That doesn’t seem to happen to everyone though.

I thought posts like these weren’t allowed by the Dudes?

You now know the formula, it will not have changed when you get back from the MN State Fare. Enjoy life, pick up when ready.

Why?

(Roy D Rushing Jr ) #13

I don’t know why not. Of course I’ve seen some pretty arbitrary moderation in groups on Facebook, but I thought it was supposed to be different here.

Did I break a rule? Seems like something that would be relevant to newbies in particular.

About 12 years ago I lost 50 pounds in a year on Atkins. Then on Christmas day someone handed me a piece of pie and everyone was saying “C’mon it’s Christmas just once won’t hurt” and similar things. I ate the pie and have been struggling ever since.

I hope this doesn’t happen to you!

More recently, I started on keto in mid-July and fell off the wagon about once a week for the first 3 weeks. It wasn’t worth it–I found it confusing, and I had resentments because I blamed certain situations, peer pressure, traditions, or whatever. So now I’m on the strait and narrow. It’s just easier.

Anyway, I hope it works out for you, and congratulations on your weight loss so far!

you can expect some discomfort and carb fog. a feeling of bloat. possibly lethargy. Might not find the carbs as desirable as you once thought.
I find that I just don’t desire/enjoy carby stuff anymore. Bread tastes like the kitchen sponge. Its just the butter on the toast that I enjoy - so just have a cheese sandwich instead - slice of cheese, buttered + maybe peanut butter + slice of cheese = cheese sandwich!! Keto approved :+1:

I did the same thing today. Huge party at work and I had decided this weekend was going to be full of food themed celebrations. I ate all day it seems and realized that while the carbs tasted great, I really wasn’t missing much. I’m glad to have got it out of my system and tomm I doubt the indulgence will be much at all. Fair food sounds amazing! Love Minnesota too!

Maybe you could limit yourself to only a few bites of each item. That way you can enjoy it but within reason. I know I could eat a whole bucket of Sweet Martha’s all by myself. For me, once I indulge, I have an awful time getting back on track. So be prepared for bad cravings once you get home and plan accordingly. Welcome home!

A meal or two is probably a non-event. Enjoy.

I would say you’ve gotten some good advice so far. You may not want quite as much as you might have previously. And you might find yourself more satisfied with a smaller portion than you remember. And… there might be some fun foods that are pretty keto friendly… burgers, dogs, cheesesteaks… maybe not so much on the sides and buns, but hey, not all fun food is bad…

I liken it to the cave man finding a honey pot every so often and gouging himself with sweet deliciousness once in a while. Our bodies are designed to deal with it, so just enjoy when you find your honey pot (without the bees stings :honeybee:!

Just came back from Disneyland where I had decided I would join my family in some carbs for two of the 5 days of vacation. I had ice cream a couple of times, a little popcorn, a mixed drink at California Adventure, half a churro and a bite of a cookie. It wasn’t as great as I remembered at all, which surprised me! I am up a couple of pounds but that is likely water and I will probably drop it this week. I beat myself up a bit while eating it but I am back on the proverbial horse, and feeling fine. In ketosis, loving forward…KCKO.
