I came to keto as a last resort. Been on it for a few months. Lost half a stone of 3 then have put that back on. When I was tracking for weeks I was on 30 net carbs and 1500 calories. I found the carbs tough, protein low (I am pescetarian) and fat easy. I now hate the food and all I want is beans and wholegrains, but I can’t lose weight that way either. Am I destined to be fat forever?
About to give up on keto
KETO is about teaching your body to run on fat metabolism. To begin with, weight shouldn’t be a goal, just sticking to the <20g Carbs and satiety with healthy fats will make your body work on the ketone side rather than glucose.
If you put the weight back on - any idea why it was? Do you think you were getting past the sugar cravings?
Do yourself a favour, try again for 3 weeks.
Concentrate on 1 thing ONLY. Keep your carbs to less than 20g a day. Forget about counting protein, fats or calories.
See how you get on.
I find 20g so hard it barely allows for spinach etc. let alone anything else. That’s why I was on 30g. It’s so austere not being able to eat ANYTHING I want to eat and just forcing stuff down.
If you can’t find ANYTHING you like to eat whilst on keto, perhaps this isn’t the diet/WOE for you.
What made you choose it in the first place?
Maybe you need less spinach with more oil or butter or cream all over it. We have ways
It’s very likely that being currently overweight that 1500 is way below your RMR and not doing you any favors going that drastically below what you need. Also, 30 NET carbs can mean 100g carbs net’d down with weird fibers or in many cases added fibers that don’t really work out too well. 30 is fine, but may want to make that actual instead of net. At least until you’re trending in the right direction.
That’s your brain selling you out, it’s most peoples biggest challenge and once you beat it it’s like a switch being flipped off and it’ll be the best day ever, but you gotta fight a little harder to get there.
Have you ever listed a sample diet for us to troubleshoot? Also, Since fish IS meat, are you avoiding the other meats just because you don’t like them? Or was that a middle ground because we’re told the others are bad for us? If so, rethink that as you’re missing out on a lot of healthy stuff for your body from both a macro and micro nutrient standpoint. If not, fish it is, but don’t go to low on your protein, people are afraid of it these days most without real cause. Protein is very helpful for weight loss contrary to popular belief.
I don’t like eating flesh but make myself eat fish because it’s healthier than just relying on vegetarian protein. Meat really would make me sick but I know it’s healthier.
Because I couldn’t sadly lose weight via calorie control or low fat. Because I react badly to fluctuations in blood sugar. Because if I am not careful I get athletes foot, all indications I should give up sugar and starch. However whole vegetarian food is all I want to eat. I’d kill for a Dahl, brown rice and yogurt right now.
Can you give us a typical day’s food? Maybe people can give alternative suggestions to help bring the carbs down.
This morning I had a pancake with eggs, 1 table spoon of coconut flour, cheese and mushrooms. I have just made fish balls with half an onion, garlic, with cauliflower rice and half a tin of tomatoes. Today is the worst I have felt in really wanting the real thing. The food tastes horrible.
Low(ish) carbs and low fat. Not surprised you’re unhappy.
Sorry, I don’t really have a good suggestion to you. But what you’re doing isn’t really the keto that so many here have come to love so much.
20g or less carbs
Moderate protein
Fat to satiety
Satiety means you eat fatty foods or add fat until you’re not hungry anymore. Not being willing/or able to eat fatty meats makes it much more difficult.
Good luck. I wish I had some good suggestions for you.
Tell us what food tastes delicious to you. If they are full of carbs, then I’d say you are not fat adapted, and your brain still wants that sugar. Your brain and your gut are VERY powerful in how they make you feel. I was surprised to read that you had a pancake for breakfast. That is not considered Keto (low carb probably, though) unless it was specifically a Keto pancake and there are recipes for them out there.
What guidelines did you use to start your keto WOE? Did you follow a book, a blog, a facebook group? Are you seasoning your food with salt and other natural seasonings to make it tasty? I’m trying to get more details from you to try and help you troubleshoot. But I think it’s mostly that you are not fat adapted yet. Are you measuring your ketones via breath or blood?
The fish balls were fried in olive oil and the tomato sauce had olive oil in too, so it was high fat.
I just wanted felafel made from chick peas, but too high carb, and of course real rice and more veg. I really want to be good, but I feel so deprived.
Yep, pancake made from separated eggs, parmesan, coconut flour, herbs and seasoning. Put mushrooms and cheddar on top. Tasted disgusting but made myself eat some. My dog loved it. I didn’t used to hate the keto food as much before, it’s getting worse.
Perhaps you could try some recipes developed by Maria Emmerich. She is very well known for her tasty recipes. Keto Konnect also has really great recipes.
Yep that sounds disgusting so I get where you are coming from. Looks like you are trying to adapt what you used to eat to be keto rather than just having scrambled eggs with butter and cheese. Which would probably be both more fatty and taste great.
What is your problem with eating meat? You are tying one arm behind your back avoiding it. You seem to know its not for health reasons so purely moral? Check out www.dietdoctor.com for some vegetarian keto recipes it may help.
Book: Eat rich and live long, web - Eric berg, loads of YouTube. I only just managed 20 to 30 carbs, really struggled to get enough protein, enjoyed the fat from cream and cheese. After a couple of months stopped tracking because it was a PITA and wasn’t working anyway. Have stayed low carb for about another month, but hate it so much I want to eat something nice. Beans, lentils, rice, pasta, potatoes.
So bored of this all the time, hence trying the pancakes. I wish I could eat meat, makes me feel sick.
