A Cool Little NSV

Cool in the sense of “not burning”. I’ve finally gotten off the Prilosec OTC I’ve been taking for 10 years or more for chronic heartburn.

The thing is, I’ve tried quitting them before and had such horrible heartburn I couldn’t do it. As far back as Christmas of '16, a friend who’s an RN was telling me about his efforts to quit PPIs and gave me a bunch of papers on why we should do it. I tried, but couldn’t overcome the searing heartburn all the time.

Last week, I read an article on Dr. Kendrick’s site saying that Proton Pump Inhibitors are associated with the real damage that causes heart disease (damage to the epithelial lining of your arteries), and since I was finishing a box I thought I’d try to quit again instead of opening a new box. Maybe it’s the addition of fasting and maybe the 20 pounds I’ve lost since June changed some pressure on my stomach, I don’t know, but I’ve been able to stop taking the Prilosec and not be awakened all night with bad heart burn. I just crossed the one week point without taking one.

I my remember my mom giving me Mylanta antacid 50 years ago when I was a teen, if not when I was 10. I remember that I always had either a bottle of Mylanta to swig or tablets to chew on in my book bag through college as far back as '72/'73. For all my life, I had some sort of antacid with me all the time.

In the big picture, it’s still better to chew Tums or Rolaids a few times a day than take Prilosec. I just haven’t had to.

That’s exciting news, Bob!

I was very happy my wife and I got off Nexium, after starting Keto. I didn’t know that was possible!

Here’s to your good health and long life! :+1:

This is an incredible victory!

That is a Fantastic Victory!!! Bravo!!!:clap::clap: I’ve never had a heartburn problem and neither did my husband until he moved here from Germany and began eating our bread/wheat products. On top of searing heartburn, he also developed lactose intolerance within about 6-9months of being in the states. Once I went low carb and changed his diet too, everything cleared up amazingly enough. Now he only eats Wasa Bread which is imported, and my keto buns. He can now drink milk without issues too.

Thank you, @dlc96_darren, @Mnketo46 and @JustPeachy. It’s really a good thing to get off the PPIs. The papers my RN friend gave me focused on dementia, but the link to CVD is just as scary.

In one of Eric Westman’s talks, he says that someone at Duke did a study where they measured stomach pH and found acidity went down on keto and they were getting people off PPIs. It was one of the first things they were able to prove in a controlled trial that keto cured.

@JustPeachy, Your husband’s story reminds me I think I have some gluten sensitivity - I used to joke about my mom making coffee from “Chock Full of Battery Acid”, but eventually realized it wasn’t the coffee but the bagel I would have with it. (This is from 20 years ago). I cut out gluten maybe four years ago, but the reflux continued.

Very cool! Congrats! I love hearing these stories!

I cringe when people see Keto as just a way to lose a little weight. There are so many benefits to this WOE!
