So, 8 weeks ago I started my keto journey at roughly 280 lbs. I was trying not to focus on actual weight since it really doesn’t matter, I have to reduce it regardless what the numbers are. I was more focused on size or how things fit me. As of now I am one full belt hole different. Was so close to two but seem to be further away now.
The first few weeks, things went great, some some significant changes , felt better all that. Seems like most people do. Now, the last two , two in a half weeks I’ve hit the wall. Nothing, in fact, I might have gained a tad. I’ve rechecked my macros, and tried changing things up. Reduced intakes of everything (keeping the same ratio) , and increasing everything. Nothing. I no longer register on the keto urine testing trips, and if I do, it is very slight. In the beginning the strip showed “heavy”.
Then, I had doctors appointment yesterday. I showed 277 on the scale. Now, just from the way my clothes have been fitting I would swear there was more than a 3 pound drop. I’m definitely not going to give up but seeing all these success stories of people dropping 30 lbs in a week (I’m just being dramatic) really is starting to bum me out.
Okay, rant over.
8 weeks in, was so excited about keto but am starting to feel some frustration
People really have different trajectories on keto (well, probably on anything): some drop a lot in the beginning and then slow down, others have a slow steady drop, and others seem to drop in fits and starts. If you still feel good, this is probably just a case of KCKO. There’s likely a ton of good stuff happening under the hood, and you just need to let the body do its thing.
Do you do any resistance work? If not, this might be a nice time to start. It will help you continue to improve your insulin sensitivity - which in the long term will help with fat loss - and it will help recomposition A LOT, so that you’ll look and feel better and better as your weight drops. When you’re - say - at the 250 mark, 250 pounds with more lean body mass compared to 250 with less looks quite different and has a different health profile.
The drop in waist measurements is terrific; that fat is generally the most problematic.
If you want more specific advice, you can give a bit more info on your age, what exactly you’re eating, any health issues, etc.
First thing is get rid of the urine stick. i show zero on them and 1.8 on bloods. the sticks only show an excess of ketones. after a while you only produce what you need. (maybe slightly more)
also whilst its nice to see the scales drop there can be soooooo many things that affect weight. bottom line is are you getting leaner? if so then keep up the good work
As far as training, I am not doing much. When I get time I’ll jump on my bike or the elliptical machine. And I do push ups in the morning and evening. Most of my physical activity is maintaining my offroad machine, ATV’s and lately a snowmobile. Yesterday I was wrestling around with a 70lb engine attempting to build a shipping crate for it, in 92 degree temps. I will never hit the gym so, biking , walking or elliptical is going to be about it.
What I should have done was take measurements of my waist and chest prior to starting then kept track with those. The weight is just a number. I just got bummed with getting to the second belt hole, then going backwards combined with the less then expected weight loss.
I will keep powering forward though. FYI, I am a 49 year old male. Not sure if I mention but I’ve also added some MCT oil into my daily intake. Usually between 1 -3 tablespoons.
Doesn’t matter the diet, patience is key.
We’d all like to go to bed and wake up our ideal weight lol
Ok, Chuck, let’s look at this.
First of all, you have gone down AT LEAST one belt hole…in ONLY two months? Woooo hoodoo, buddy, that’s AWESOME!!!
Second, the scale is a VERY inaccurate 1800s torture device (I’d say “medieval” but they didn’t have scales then.) Just think of scales this way - they are better as a measure of how hydrated you are than how much fat you carry. In fact you can go full “Stephen Hawking” here and say that a scale only measures how “attractive” you are to the earth that day (i.e., gravity). Some days the earth finds you more attractive than other days. There. Gimme a “BOOM-dee-addah!”
Finally, keto is about healing the body and metabolism. Fat loss is more of a (fantastic) side effect. Now after 8 weeks of giving your body more of what it needs, it may be thinking “alright Chuck, I can depend on this food now” and can be taking some time to do some much-needed repairs. Your body knows what to do. And it has its own schedule that it follows.
I’ll repeat: your body knows what to do. Your body knows what to do.
So say “thank you, body” and don’t worry, and go have a simply wonderful day!
Hope this helps!
